Coleman, Hansen Power OU to Walk-Off Win Over Horns

April 01, 2023 | Softball

NORMAN — Down two runs in the bottom of the seventh, No. 1 Oklahoma rallied to beat No. 9/8 Texas, 4-3, behind a Jayda Coleman game-tying home run and Kinzie Hansen walk-off single.

With the win, Oklahoma (32-1, 5-0) won its 57th straight game at Marita Hynes Field and took the series from its Red River Rival, securing its 11th consecutive conference series victory over the Longhorns (30-7-1, 3-2).

After Oklahoma left a pair on base at the bottom of the first, Texas went up in the second inning via error, the first of three unearned runs to start the game.

A scoreless third and fourth inning ensued before the Horns plated their second run of the game on a fielder's choice RBI from Mia Scott in the fifth.

Oklahoma got on the board in the bottom of the fifth. After singles from Rylie Boone and Tiare Jennings, Haley Lee ripped a ball to second base that scooted through the legs of the UT second baseman and allowed Coleman to score.

A solo shot in the sixth from UT's Viviana Martinez put the Longhorns up a pair headed to the seventh.

Boone turned over the lineup to the top of the order in the bottom of the seventh with a leadoff single through the right side, bringing Coleman to the plate. On a 1-1 count, Coleman lifted her team-leading ninth home run to the opposite field and over the left field fence to tie the game. The two-time All-American has already matched her single-season career high in homers, matching her total from her freshman season in 2021 in 27 less games.

Following a Jennings walk, Lee single and Grace Lyons' fielder's choice, Hansen stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and one out. On a 1-2 count, Hansen singled to left center to score pinch runner Avery Hodge in walk-off fashion for OU's 24th straight win.

OU secured its 11th straight victory over Texas in Norman and 50th consecutive Big 12 series win.

Coleman paced OU with a 2-for-3, two RBI day with one homer, while Hansen went 2-for-4 with the game-winning RBI. Six Sooners registered a hit in the contest.

In the circle, super senior Alex Storako pitched six innings and surrendered three runs, only one being earned, on five hits to pair with six strikeouts and one walk. Sophomore Jordy Bahl entered in the seventh and earned the win to move to 10-1 on the season, retiring the side in the seventh.

The series finale begins at 11 a.m. CT on Sunday and can be seen on ESPN2 and heard via 107.7 The Franchise in Oklahoma and nationwide on The Varsity app.
