KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Oklahoma men's basketball fell to Oklahoma State 57-49 in the opening round of the 2023 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship on Wednesday night at T-Mobile Center.
Tanner Groves recorded his sixth double-double of the season and finished with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Grant Sherfield added eight points and
Milos Uzan scored seven.
The two in-state rivals traded baskets to open the contest and the Sooners held a narrow 7-4 lead with 16:40 left in the first half.
Oklahoma State scored 14 unanswered points and held a commanding lead halfway through the first frame.
The Sooners responded and brought the OSU advantage to two with a 12-0 scoring spurt.
Jacob Groves opened the scoring run with a 3-pointer and Sherfield added to the spurt with lay-in off an OSU turnover.
Bijan Cortes closed the run with back-to-back 3-pointers.
OSU responded with a pair of baskets to close the half.
The Cowboys held a 26-20 edge at the break and opened the final frame with a 3-pointer.
OU's freshman duo of
Otega Oweh and Uzan helped cut the lead to four after a layup and 3-pointer, respectively.
Over the next 10 minutes, Oklahoma State pushed its lead to double digits.
The Sooners shot 25.0% (14-56) from the field compared to the Cowboys' 35.0% (21-60). Oklahoma held the slight edge from deep, outshooting OSU 26.1% (6-23) to 25.0% (5-20).
