FRISCO, Texas — Shortstop
Dakota Harris notched two hits and two RBIs and catcher
Easton Carmichael drove in three runs on two hits, but Oklahoma fell to Ohio State 12-9 Sunday in the finale of the Frisco College Baseball Classic at Riders Field.
The Sooners (6-5) completed a 2-1 weekend at the Frisco Classic that included wins over California and Mississippi State by scores of 9-5 and 15-9. Harris, who went 10 for 17 (.588) with six RBIs in the tournament, was named Most Valuable Player. Carmichael, second baseman
Jackson Nicklaus and center fielder
John Spikerman were also selected to the all-tournament team.
Oklahoma led 3-0 after the first inning on Sunday, fell behind 5-3 in the third inning and then tied the game 5-5 with two runs in the fourth. The Buckeyes (5-6) scored three runs in the fifth and seventh innings to go ahead 11-5. OU chipped away with two runs in the seventh and eighth frames, before OSU added a run in the ninth to reach the final margin.
"We took the momentum in the first inning when they walked some guys, and we took advantage of that. The separator in the game was the third inning," Oklahoma head coach
Skip Johnson said. "We never could regain the momentum. They got the big hits with men in scoring position, and we didn't.
"I think the biggest thing I got from this tournament is that we have fight. Even when we were down six runs today, we fought back and gave ourselves a chance to win. When you have a team that fights back, that's all you can ask for. All you can ask them to do is give effort. I was really proud of our team, because they gave a good fight."
The Sooners took advantage of four free passes and a Carmichael single in the first inning to score three runs. Ohio State took a 5-3 lead in the third on run-scoring single, a two-run double and a two-run base hit, but OU tied it up in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run double by Harris.
OSU went ahead 8-5 in the fifth on three doubles and a single, then added three runs in the seventh on a home run by center fielder Kade Kern. Oklahoma cut the deficit to two runs in the seventh on a groundout by Carmichael and an RBI single by first baseman
Rocco Garza-Gongora. Harris and Nicklaus both singled to lead off the frame.
OU pulled within 11-9 in the eighth on a base-loaded infield single by Carmichael and an RBI hit-by-pitch on third baseman
Wallace Clark. The Buckeyes scored on a pair of singles in the ninth to make it 12-9.
Garza-Gongora finished with two hits and an RBI, Spikerman drew three walks and scored two runs and right fielder
Bryce Madron walked three times and scored a run. Catcher Matthew Gravelin and designated hitter Tyler Pettorini each went 3 for 5 for OSU and Pettorini drove in two runs. Kern and third baseman Nick Erwin each had three RBIs.
Carson Atwood (0-1) pitched 1.1 innings in relief of
Braxton Douthit and took the loss. Jonah Jenkins (2-0) pitched 3.2 relief innings in the win and Landon Beidelschies was credited with his second save.
The Sooners return home for two midweek games against UNLV at L. Dale Mitchell Park. Game times are 6:30 p.m. Tuesday and 1 p.m. Wednesday. Tickets can be purchased for just $5.
