SAN FRANCISCO – Oklahoma signed for a 7-under 273 to remain in second place at the 53rd playing of The Goodwin presented by Palo Alto Networks on Friday afternoon. The Sooners (2, -12) will enter Saturday's final round one shot behind No. 11 Georgia State and six strokes clear of third-place San Diego.
Ben Lorenz carded a 66 (-4) on Friday to move into a tie atop the individual leaderboard as the Peoria, Ariz., product will go for his first collegiate win at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco tomorrow.
Lorenz, a junior at OU who has seen considerable action as a Sooner started on the back nine, where he rattled off eight consecutive pars before sinking a birdie on the 18th. Lorenz turned on the jets across the front of the course, closing his day with a 3-under 32 on the front to move into first at 6-under. He shares the lead with Washington's Bo Peng, but nine golfers are within three shots of the Sooner.
Stephen Campbell Jr. posted a 71 (+1) in the second round but remained in a tie for 25th at even-par on the week. Patrick Welch, playing at his home course, matched Lorenz's 66 on Friday to move up 73 spots on the leaderboard to share 38th after 36 holes. Joining Welch in 38th, sophomore Drew Goodman posted an even-par 70 on Friday, and Matthew Troutman rallied for a 1-over 71 as an unattached player to move into 38th as well. Jase Summy posted a 75 (+5) and is in 47th place heading into the weekend.
As a team, Oklahoma's 37 birdies on the week are second most in the field behind only San Francisco's 40. Pacing the field on par 5s, the Sooners are a blistering 14-under par on the course's longest holes this week.
Head coach Ryan Hybl's team will tee off at 3 p.m. CT on Saturday and is paired with No. 11 Georgia Tech (1, -13), San Diego (3, -6) and No. 8 Stanford (4, -4). The Sooners seek their third win of the season after taking home the team titles at the Puerto Rico Classic and Ka'anapali Classic earlier in the campaign.
