Oklahoma No. 1 Overall Seed for NCAA Championships

March 20, 2023 | Women's Gymnastics

NORMAN – The road to the 2023 NCAA Women's Gymnastics Championships will make a journey through Norman and Lloyd Noble Center.

The Oklahoma women's gymnastics team earned the nation's No. 1 overall seed for the seventh time in the last eight seasons, the NCAA announced Monday. The Sooners will be the No. 1 seed in the Norman Regional, the 13th consecutive season OU has earned a No. 1 seed for regional competition. The top-seeded Sooners will face No. 8 seed Alabama, No. 9 seed Kentucky, No. 16 seed Ohio State, Arkansas, Ball State, Illinois, Iowa and NC State.

"We are honored to host such a strong field of teams here in Norman," 17th-year OU head coach K.J. Kindler said. "The fans will have an incredible opportunity to see our sport's best over a three-day championship, culminating in the final two teams who will move on to Fort Worth for the NCAA semifinals and Four on the Floor. I know our fans will fill the LNC!"

The top 36 teams based on the national qualifying score were selected for regional competition. The committee named the top 16 teams and seeded them in the bracket. Seeding determined at the time of selections will be maintained throughout the championship.

Teams 17-36 were placed geographically at one of the four regional sites. Nine teams will compete at each of those four sites, with the top two at each site advancing to Fort Worth, Texas, for the April 13-15 NCAA Championships. Arkansas (No. 17), Illinois (No. 22) and Iowa (No. 25) are also ranked in the top 25 of the current RoadToNationals standings.

Individual all-around competitors competing in the Norman Regional will be Kent State's Rachel Decavitch and Hannah Ruthberg, NC State's Emily Shepard and Rutgers' Hannah Joyner.

Individual event specialists are Ball State's Suki Pfister and Victoria Henry (both vault), Grace Sumner (beam) and Megan Teter (bars, floor); Illinois State's Alana Laster (vault) and Jaye Mack (floor); Kent State's Karlie Franz and Alyssa Guns (both floor), and Stephanie Zannella (beam); NC State's Chloe Negrete (vault, beam); New Hampshire's Kylie Gorgenyi (bars) and Robyn Kelley and Alyssa Worthington (both beam); and Rutgers' Emily Leese (vault).

The regional will be held March 29-April 1. For the second straight year, the meet will have a recovery day on Friday, March 31 for the gymnasts between the second round and finals.

OU is one of four NCAA Regional host sites this season, joining No. 4 UCLA, No. 13 Denver and Pittsburgh. This marks the fifth time for the Sooners to host a regional (also in 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2022). OU has won all four regional championships held at the LNC.

The regional begins on Wednesday, March 29, with the first round, featuring Ball State and NC State at 2 p.m. CT. The winner will advance to the second round on Thursday, March 30.

The afternoon session of round two will begin at 2 p.m. CT and will feature No. 8 seed Alabama, No. 9 seed Kentucky, Illinois and Iowa. The evening session will begin at 7 p.m. CT and will include the host and top-seeded Sooners, No. 16 seed Ohio State, Arkansas and the winner of the first round. The top two teams from each session will advance to Saturday's regional final, beginning at 5 p.m. CT.

The top two teams and the top all-around competitor (who is not on an advancing team) from each regional will receive an automatic berth to the NCAA Championships. In addition, the top event specialist on each event who is not part of an advancing team or all-around competitor advances to the national championship (in that event only).

OU, which is 17-1 and holds an NCAA-record National Qualifying Score (NQS) of 198.355, will aim for its 13th consecutive regional title and 19th straight NCAA Championships berth at regional competition. Last weekend, the Sooners registered the best-ever Big 12 Championship score (198.400) to claim their 10th conference title in the last 11 seasons.

The Sooners have faced only two of the eight Norman Regional teams this season in SEC members Alabama and Arkansas. OU won its fifth straight Metroplex Challenge title against a field that included the Crimson Tide and Razorbacks on Feb. 11.

The Sooners will be led into competition by Kindler, the 12-time Big 12 Coach of the Year. Kindler has guided OU to 12 NCAA regional titles, 14 Big 12 championships and 15 NCAA Championships appearances. Under Kindler's leadership, OU has achieved 11 top-three NCAA finishes since 2010 and has won five national championships, including last season.

All-session tickets for the NCAA postseason event are on sale now for as low as $10, and single-meet tickets will be available Tuesday, March 21, at 10 a.m. CT. Click here to buy your tickets.
