NORMAN — Oklahoma baseball scored four two-out runs in the seventh inning, taking the lead on a two-run single by
Anthony Mackenzie, to come from behind and defeat No. 11 TCU 7-5 Sunday afternoon and win its Big 12 conference series at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
The Sooners (13-7, 2-1 Big 12) tied the game 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth, but the Horned Frogs (10-9, 1-2 Big 12) retook the lead with two runs in the top of the seventh. In the bottom half,
John Spikerman brought home the tying runs with a pinch-hit grounder off the second baseman and Mackenzie singled to right center two batters later to put OU in front 7-5.
Kendall Pettis went 3 for 3 and scored two runs,
Easton Carmichael went 3 for 5 and scored a run and
Diego Muniz singled and scored twice.
Freshman
Julien Hachem (1-0) retired the only two batters he faced in the seventh inning on a groundout and a fly out to earn his first collegiate victory.
Aaron Weber got the final two outs of the ninth to pick up his second straight save in the series and his fourth of the season.
"It just shows what our culture is about, more than anything," Oklahoma head coach
Skip Johnson said. "That was a great day for our culture, our new guys, how we battle and what we talk about, picking the next guy up. I thought that was huge. Spikerman came up with a big hit. Kenny (Pettis) played really well. Diego played well at third. It was just picking each other up. Even from the bullpen, it was really huge."
The entirety of Oklahoma's seventh-inning rally occurred with two outs. Carmichael singled to right field and Muniz singled through the left side. Spikerman entered as a pinch hitter and hit the ball to the second baseman, but the ball caromed out toward the right field line, allowing both runners to score from first and second base. Pettis then reached on an infield single, and Mackenzie lined a base hit to right field, scoring both runners.
The Sooners cut their 3-0 deficit to 3-2 in the fifth inning.
Sebastian Orduno and Pettis led off the frame with consecutive singles to right field. Orduno came home on a fielder's choice, and
Dakota Harris singled home Pettis. OU tied the game 3-all in the sixth when
Rocco Garza-Gongora was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, plating Muniz.
TCU took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning on an RBI double by Karson Bowen and a throwing error on a bunt, then made it 3-0 in the fifth on a solo home run by Brayden Taylor. The Frogs made it 5-3 in the top of the seventh on a two-run single by Bowen.
"It's just battling," Johnson said. "That's really who we are, what we've been. That's what our culture has always been about. You have a third of your (batting) life left, even with two outs. If we just take care of the ball early, there's maybe only one run on the board. Who knows? But just to navigate through their lineup and what we did was really huge, from the standpoint of next man up."
OU won 3-1 on Saturday and 7-5 on Sunday after dropping the series opener 13-5 Friday night. The Sooners have won 11 of their last 14 games this season, and now six straight Big 12 series dating back to last April.
Oklahoma will face Dallas Baptist on Tuesday at Mitchell Park. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
