Troutman Shares 36-Hole Lead in College Debut

March 17, 2023 | Men's Golf

TUCSON, Ariz. – Making his collegiate debut on Friday, Oklahoma men's golf freshman Matthew Troutman fired rounds of 64 and 71 at the par-72 OMNI Tucson National to grab a share of the 36-hole lead at the Men's NIT.

As a team, the 11th-ranked Sooners (T7, -8) signed for a 280 (-8) and a 288 (E) to share seventh place with Oklahoma State at the two-day, 54-hole event with only Saturday's final round left to play. The tournament is playing host to 13 total teams, including seven inside the nation's top 25.

Troutman (T1, -8), a freshman from Louisville who was a two-time AJGA All-American and youngest winner of the Kentucky State Amateur, opened his day in the desert with a string of three birdies after starting on the par-4 sixth hole. A bogey on the ninth hole was the only blemish on his card as Troutman rattled off five more birdies for day's low round – an 8-under 64. The afternoon round proved tougher for the freshman, but he still sunk a trio of birdies that were offset by two bogeys en route to a 1-under 71. He shares the lead with Arizona's Zach Pollo entering the final round at 9-under par.

Playing unattached, Ben Lorenz is tied for 10th at 4-under par as the Arizona native returned to his home state with back-to-back rounds of 70. Also playing unattached from the Oklahoma lineup, Stephen Campbell Jr. (-3) fired a 71 and 70 to share 14th after 36 holes.

Sophomore Drew Goodman (-1) sits in 21st after rounds of 69 and 73 Friday. A trio of Sooners sit outside the top 50 in the field – Jase Summy (55, +2), Patrick Welch (T56, +3) and Jaxon Dowell (T66, +5). Jake Holbrook, competing as an individual, is tied with Welch for 56th.

Southern California (1, -19) owns the lead after the first two rounds, followed by Arizona (-15) and Arizona State (-14). Troutman is trying to become the second Sooner ever to win the Men's NIT, following All-American Garett Reband's victory in 2021. The freshman's first-round 64 was tied for the event's fifth-lowest round in its 20-year history.

Tee times and pairings for Saturday's final round are to be announced.
