Sooners Beat Houston 8-3 Saturday, Clinch Road Series

March 11, 2023 | Baseball

HOUSTON — Freshman catcher Easton Carmichael drove in four runs, including a three-run home run in the sixth inning, to lead the Oklahoma baseball team to an 8-3 series-clinching win over Houston Saturday evening at Schroeder Park.

Carmichael's homer came as part of a four-run sixth inning that blew open a 7-1 lead. The Sooners (10-5) scored eight unanswered runs after the Cougars (5-9) plated one in the first inning. Right fielder Bryce Madron's solo homer in the fourth inning gave OU the lead and first baseman Anthony Mackenzie crushed a homer to right field in the seventh inning to make the score 8-1.

Braxton Douthit (2-0) was outstanding in the start. He completed 7.0 innings, struck out four and walked two. The only two hits he allowed came in the first inning, and the run was unearned. Aaron Weber pitched a perfect ninth, ending the game with a called third strike.

"I thought Braxton was good and our defense was good," Oklahoma head coach Skip Johnson said. "Separating the game there in the middle innings was huge. It allowed us to not extend Braxton any more than we needed to. He got stronger as the game went. Tacking on runs and situational hitting was really big for us."

The first two Houston batters of the game reached on an error and a double, but the Cougars only scored once in the opening frame. After Alex Lopez doubled off the wall in right center with runners on second and third, center fielder John Spikerman fired the ball to second baseman Jackson Nicklaus, who from shallow center field, threw a strike to Carmichael at the plate to cut down the second runner. Spikerman showed off his cannon arm on the next play, catching a fly ball in center field and hitting Mackenzie in the air ahead of the tagging runner at third base to end the inning.

Oklahoma tied the game in the top of the second inning when Nicklaus scored on an RBI groundout by Carmichael. Nicklaus led off with a walk and stole second and third base. Madron lifted an opposite field homer in the fourth inning to put OU in front 2-1. It was his second homer of the season.

The Sooners tacked on another run in the sixth on a sacrifice squeeze bunt by left fielder Sebastian Orduno. Carmichael scored on the play after hitting his fourth triple of the season.

Nicklaus drove in OU's first run of the sixth inning with a sacrifice fly that plated Mackenzie. Freshman first baseman Rocco Garza-Gongora reached on an infield single that put two runners on base and set up Carmichael's blast off the batter's eye in center field.

Mackenzie's seventh-inning home run landed high in the trees beyond the right field wall to make the score 8-1. It was also his second home run of the year.

Houston reached the final margin by scoring two runs in the eighth inning on a passed ball and a wild pitch.

The Sooners and Cougars conclude their series at 1 p.m. Sunday. The game will be televised via ESPN+ and broadcast locally on Sportstalk 99.3 FM/1400 AM KREF and Sportstalk1400.com.
