NORMAN – Oklahoma men's gymnastics fifth-year senior
Spencer Goodell has been named a finalist for the prestigious Nissen-Emery Award, which is presented annually to the year's outstanding senior collegiate gymnast, it was announced Thursday.
Goodell is a senior captain, an All-American, a two-time Winter Cup participant, a former U.S. Junior National Team member who competed with the Senior National Team at the 2018 Pan American Championships and a college graduate who is working toward his master's degree.
The Tigard, Ore., product has won eight career event titles and leads the nation with the highest floor score recorded so far during the 2023 season (14.900, set on Feb. 11). He ranks seventh in the country in floor average (14.000) and ninth nationally in parallel bars (13.867).
A three-time team silver medalist at the NCAA Championships with OU, Goodell earned All-America status on floor exercise at the 2022 NCAA Championships with a 14.366 score. At the 2023 Winter Cup, Goodell participated in event finals on floor exercise and parallel bars. He also qualified for the 2019 Winter Cup and participated in the all-around final as a collegiate freshman.
Goodell graduated in May 2022 with his Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Management and is pursuing a Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership. He is a five-time member of the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll, an Academic All-Big 12 First Team selection (2021), and Academic All-Big 12 At-Large Second Team selection (2022).
The Nissen-Emery Award, the "Heisman Trophy" of gymnastics, honors the collegiate senior gymnast who has established an outstanding record of achievement during his college career. The winner must also exhibit good sportsmanship and fair play and maintain a high standard of scholarship throughout his college career. The award presentation is held annually at the NCAA Gymnastics Championships.
