NORMAN – In an instant classic, No. 16 Oklahoma knocked off Kansas State, 90-86, in overtime on Wednesday night to forge a tie with No. 12 Texas atop the Big 12 standings with just one conference game remaining.
On a senior night where the Sooners honored one of the most decorated senior classes in program history in
Ana Llanusa,
Madi Williams and
Taylor Robertson, it was junior
Skylar Vann whose career-high 23 points powered Oklahoma (23-5, 13-4) to the thrilling win. The win guaranteed Oklahoma the No. 1 or No. 2 seed at next week's Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship, solidifying the team's best Big 12 finish since a runner-up placement in 2015. A Sooner victory on Saturday at Oklahoma State would clinch at least a share of the program's first Big 12 championship since 2009.
The Sooners jumped on Kansas State (16-14, 5-12) early, setting the tone in the first half behind a 19-0 run to take a 30-8 lead early in the second quarter. But the Wildcats showed no quit, cutting the lead to 16, 45-29, at the half. A 23-5 K-State run to open the second half set up one of the most spectacular finishes the Lloyd Noble Center had seen in recent memory. The Sooners took a 58-57 lead into the fourth, but a Serena Sundell 3-pointer to open the frame officially erased OU's 22-point deficit to give the 'Cats their first lead at 60-58.
Oklahoma answered with a 10-0 run to take an eight-point advantage, but Sundell and the Wildcats fought back into it, taking a 77-73 lead with 28 seconds left. Senior
Madi Williams scored a layup, and OU fouled
Gabby Gregory to send KSU to the line. The former Sooner split from the charity stripe to push the KSU lead to three. Before the Sooners could inbound the ball with six seconds left,
Madi Williams was fouled and split her free throws to make it 78-76 Wildcats. Then Sundell missed both of her free throws to give Oklahoma one last chance. The Sooners advanced the ball out of a timeout, inbounded it to
Madi Williams, who then fed it to a cutting
Skylar Vann who laid it in and pushed the game into overtime tied at 78. In the first possession of the extra frame,
Taylor Robertson buried her fifth 3-pointer of the night, and Oklahoma never trailed the rest of the night, clawing back for a 90-86 win.
Vann's career-high 23 points were paired with four rebounds and three assists. On what might be their final home game at Lloyd Noble Center, the super-senior trio of Williams, Llanusa and Robertson combined for 44 points, scoring 19, 15 and 10, respectively.
Liz Scott scored 11 points to go with nine rebounds in a near double-double effort.
The Sooners honored their super seniors after the game, allowing fans to celebrate Llanusa, Williams and Robertson. The three won eight games in their first season together in 2018-19, and have posted back-to-back seasons of 23+ wins last year and this year. Combining for over 6,200 career points, they're not only the nation's highest-scoring trio that has played at the same school their entire careers, but also the highest-scoring trio in Oklahoma history,
The regular-season finale is set for Oklahoma this Saturday when it travels to Stillwater for Bedlam vs. Oklahoma State (20-9, 10-8) at 2 p.m. in Gallagher-Iba Arena. The Sooners came from behind to beat the Cowgirls earlier this season in Norman, 97-93.
