Southern Highlands Collegiate
Summy in Contention After Day One at Southern Highlands
February 26, 2023 | Men's Golf
LAS VEGAS – Oklahoma men's golf true freshman Jase Summy shined Sunday in his return to the course, firing a clean-card 66 (-6) to grab a share of fourth place after the opening round of the Southern Highlands Collegiate.
Summy is playing unattached from the ninth-ranked Sooners, as the Oklahoma lineup sits in a tie for eighth after signing for a 287 (-1) at the 54-hole event held annually at Southern Highlands Golf Club in Las Vegas. The 15-team field features nine ranked teams, and the entire field is chasing No. 4 North Carolina (1, -17) after Sunday's round.
Summy (T4, -6), who missed the Sooners' spring opener with an injury per head coach Ryan Hybl, was sensational in his return. The Keller, Texas, product started off No. 10 and opened with three pars but then tallied back-to-back-to-back birdies on Nos. 13-15 to move into the top 10. A fourth birdie on the par-5 18th was followed by two more birdies on Nos. 1 and 8 to wrap up the bogey-free round.
Leading the OU contingent, Patrick Welch (T11, -3) had an up-and-down day with six birdies but tallied a pair of bogeys with a double-bogey to post a 69 (-3). Drew Goodman and Jake Holbrook fired matching even-par 72s, with each Sooner sinking three birdies on the day to share 29th. Ben Lorenz, fresh off a runner-up finish in Puerto Rico, tallied a double-bogey on the 620-yard third hole but played the remainder of his round even to sign for a 74 (+2) and shares 50th. Stephen Campbell Jr. signed for a 3-over and is in 61st.
The Sooners (T8, -1) are just four shots back of third, nine back of second, but 16 back of the Tar Heels with two rounds left to play.
Oklahoma tees off in Monday's second round with TCU and Texas A&M at 11 a.m. CT. Then, Summy goes off of No. 10 at 11:30 CT.
