NORMAN – For the fifth time this season, freshman
Faith Torrez has been named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday. This is also Torrez's third consecutive conference weekly honor.
Torrez's five weekly conference honors is the most for a single gymnast this season. She joins Sooner sophomore duo
Jordan Bowers (three) and
Danielle Sievers (two) as the only gymnasts this season to earn multiple weekly conference accolades.
The Bristol, Wis., native competed on three events in Oklahoma's win at Texas Woman's University and matched career highs on floor (9.950) and beam (9.900), while also posting a 9.800 on bars. Torrez earned her third floor title and matched a personal-best on the event for the fourth time this season. She also tied a career high on beam for the third time in 2023.
Torrez's scores helped the Sooners, who were competing in their seventh meet of the season and fifth on the road, improve to 11-0 as they posted their second-highest score of the year with a 198.325.
Over the weekend, she was the top freshman in the Big 12 on three events, floor, beam and bars (tied). In the first week of the NQS rankings this season, Torrez is the top freshman nationally and fifth overall on floor. She is also top freshman in the Big 12 on three events – floor (9.940), beam (9.870) and bars (9.860).
