Nunez, Yockers Win MPSF Weekly Awards

February 21, 2023 | Men's Gymnastics

NORMAN – Oklahoma men's gymnastics junior Zach Nunez was named Gymnast of the Week and freshman Ignacio Yockers was named Specialist of the Week by the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation after leading the Sooners to a 418.250 to 417.650 road win at No. 3 Nebraska on Friday night, the conference office announced Tuesday.

This is the fourth straight week in which Yockers has been honored by the MPSF. He was named Freshman of the Week on Feb. 1 and Feb. 7 and Specialist of the Week on Feb. 14. This is Nunez's second Gymnast of the Week honor this season (also Feb. 7).

Yockers, who is ranked No. 1 nationally on pommel horse, set a new national standard on the event for the third time this season, registering a 15.550 on Friday night. He surpassed his previous high score of 15.100, set just last week, by .450 points, and posted the best pommel horse score nationally since the 2020 season. No other gymnast in the country has scored better than 14.900 this season. Yockers leads the nation in pommel score average (15.150) by half of a point.

Nunez, the No. 1-ranked all-around gymnast in the country, scored an 83.100 in the all-around on Friday. His 14.550 vault score was a career high, his 13.550 on high bar was a season high and his 14.600 on pommel horse was his second straight score of 14.600 or better on pommel. Needing a big score on parallel bars to overtake the Huskers in the final rotation, Nunez posted a 13.950 (his second-highest score of the season) in the second spot. Nunez's third straight all-around score of 83-plus vaulted him into the No. 1 spot in the national all-around rankings.

Oklahoma has now won seven MPSF weekly awards this season. In addition to Yockers' four honors and Nunez's two honors, and Dan Simmons was named Specialist of the Week on Feb. 7.

No. 1 Oklahoma takes a break from NCAA competition this weekend for Winter Cup, which will be held Feb. 24-26 in Louisville, Ky. Six current team members (Guimaraes, Goodell, Nunez, Yockers, Jack Freeman and Dan Simmons) have qualified for the event.

The Sooners next compete as a team Saturday, March 4 against No. 5 Michigan at McCasland Field House. The meet will begin at 6 p.m.
