OU Rises to No. 1 in Men's Gym National Rankings

NORMAN – The Oklahoma men's gymnastics team has taken over the top spot in the national rankings for the first time this season, boasting a top-three-score average of 416.333, after registering scores of 418-plus in consecutive meets.
The Sooners claimed a home win over Stanford on Feb. 11 with a score of 418.900 and a road win at Nebraska on Feb. 17 with a 418.250. In its season opener at Rocky Mountain Open, OU scored 411.850.
Oklahoma, which leads the nation in three events, sits ahead of No. 2 Stanford (414.800). Nebraska (409.733), Penn State (406.033) and OU's March 4 opponent Michigan (406.017) round out the top five.
The Sooners hold the national lead on floor exercise (70.050), pommel horse (70.383) and high bar (68.833), and rank second in vault (72.033), third in parallel bars (68.883) and fifth in still rings (67.333).
Individually, junior Zach Nunez leads the nation in the all-around with an 83.350 average. In his three all-around attempts, Nunez has scored 83.400, 83.550 and 83.100. Freshman Ignacio Yockers leads the country in pommel horse by half of a point. He notched the best collegiate pommel horse score in three years with his 15.550 on Friday at Nebraska. Nunez ranks third on pommel horse (14.567) and freshman Mac Seyler ranks sixth (14.017).
Fifth-year senior Vitaliy Guimaraes ranks second nationally in floor average (14.567), while senior Jack Freeman ranks fourth (14.417), fifth-year senior Spencer Goodell is tied for sixth (14.317) and sophomore Emre Dodanli ranks eighth (14.283).
Freeman ranks second in the country on high bar (14.183) and freshman Kelton Christiansen ranks sixth (14.033). On vault, Guimaraes (14.683) and junior Dan Simmons (14.683) are tied for seventh and Dodanli ranks 10th (14.633). Nunez (14.000) and Guimaraes (13.900) rank eighth and ninth, respectively, on parallel bars.
Oklahoma takes a break from NCAA competition this weekend for Winter Cup, which will be held Feb. 24-26 in Louisville, Ky. Six current team members (Guimaraes, Goodell, Nunez, Yockers, Jack Freeman and Dan Simmons) have qualified for the event.
The Sooners next compete as a team Saturday, March 4 against Michigan at McCasland Field House. The meet will begin at 6 p.m.
