NORMAN – Oklahoma men's gymnastics freshman
Ignacio Yockers was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's gym Specialist of the Week after scoring 15.100 on his pommel horse routine to lead the No. 2 Sooners in a win over No. 1 Stanford and William & Mary on Saturday, the conference office announced Tuesday.
This is the third straight week in which Yockers has been honored by the MPSF. He was named Freshman of the Week on Feb. 1 and Feb. 7. This weekend, the Tulsa, Okla., product turned in what OU head coach
Mark Williams described Saturday night as "probably one of the best pommel horse routines that any OU gymnast has ever done."
Yockers' incredible 15.100 was the highest pommel score in the country this season (by two-tenths of a point), and is also OU's highest pommel horse since 2017. Yockers' performance anchored a 71.250 team score, which ranks as best in the country this season.
The true freshman currently leads the nation in pommel horse average (14.425). In his last three meets, Yockers has registered scores of 14.800, 14.600 and 15.100 on pommel horse. His 14.8, scored on Jan. 28, also set a national high score at the time.
Oklahoma has now won five MPSF weekly awards this season. In addition to Yockers' three honors, juniors
Zach Nunez (Gymnast of the Week) and
Dan Simmons (Specialist of the Week) were recognized on Feb. 7.
The No. 2 Sooners travel to Lincoln, Neb., Friday for a tri-meet against No. 3 Nebraska and Simpson. The meet is set to begin at 7 p.m., and will be televised on Big Ten Network Plus.
