February 12, 2023 | Men's Golf
RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – The Oklahoma men's golf team surged late and finished the opening round of the Puerto Rico Classic alone in fourth place, four shots back of second place in the spring-opening event. After the drop score, the Sooners (4th, -5) played their final nine holes at 4-under par.
Ben Lorenz, playing unattached, sits alone in third after 18 holes after signing for a clean 67 (-5). Stephen Campbell Jr. and Patrick Welch matched 3-under 69s to share fifth place, leading the Oklahoma lineup.
Welch and Campbell Jr. were joined in the top 20 of the individual leaderboard by Drew Goodman, who fired a 71 (-1) and is tied for 19th after round one. Luke Kluver posted a pair of birdies en route to a 74 (+2) on Sunday morning, while Jake Holbrook (T74, +7) finished with a 79.
Joining Lorenz as an unattached player, Jaxon Dowell birdied four of his first five holes to sit inside the top five early, but a four-over back nine pushed him to even for the day and into a tie for 39th.
The ninth-ranked Sooners posted 15 birdies on the day, which placed them in the middle of the pack. Guided by 58 pars, fourth most in the field, Oklahoma will enter day two at the tournament 11 strokes back of first-place East Tennessee State (-14) and four behind second-place Georgia (-9).
Head coach Ryan Hybl's team will tee off at 6:30 a.m. CT in Monday's second round with South Carolina (5th, -4) and No. 7 Tennessee (6th, -3)
