NORMAN — The No. 9-ranked Oklahoma men's golf team is slated to open its spring slate on Sunday at the Puerto Rico Classic. Teams will tee off on Sunday, Feb. 12, at the three-day, 54-hole tournament played at Grand Reserve Golf Club in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, home of the PGA Tour's Puerto Rico Open.
This year's tournament marks the 30th year of the PR Classic, as the Sooners highlight a 12-team field that features eight top-50 teams, including No. 7 Tennessee. Last season, the Sooners set a program record by firing a 59-under par to win the tournament as Chris Gotterup won medalist honors, earning a spot in the PGA's Puerto Rico Open. This year's individual winner will also receive an invite to the professional event, slated for March 2-5.
In its last time on the course, Oklahoma closed the fall with a win at the Ka'anapali Classic. The Sooners fired a 41-under par to win the event by 12 strokes with Jake Holbrook and Drew Goodman sharing fifth. Overall in the fall season, head coach Ryan Hybl's team posted the win in Hawaii, three top-three finishes and a 4-1 record at Big 12 Match Play.
This week in Puerto Rico the Oklahoma lineup features three top-100 players in No. 58 Patrick Welch, No. 67 Jake Holbrook and No. 76 Stephen Campbell Jr. Luke Kluver and Drew Goodman round out the Sooner contingent with Jaxon Dowell and Ben Lorenz playing as individuals.
