NORMAN – The Oklahoma women's gymnastics team took to the floor to showcase their 2024 routines at their annual intrasquad Friday night at the Sam Viersen Gymnastics Center.
In a live meet setting with two judges on each event, the Sooners previewed their new routines and skills on all four events. Eleven different Sooners competed with eight on each apparatus and five Sooners in the all-around –
Jordan Bowers,
Audrey Davis,
Katherine LeVasseur,
Ragan Smith and
Faith Torrez.
"Tonight went awesome," head coach K.J. Kindler said. "Obviously we weren't paying a ton of attention to the scores, it was about the energy, it was about getting back out there, handling those butterflies and all that good stuff. I was really excited about the energy the team had, the way they were feeding off of each other, and the great turnout tonight."
On vault, the Sooners showcased eight 10.0 start-value vaults with seven Yurchenko 1.5's and a pike front half from freshman Hannah Scheible. The Sooners have a deep vault squad, led by stuck 1.5s from Torrez and LeVasseur, the latter of whom scored a perfect 10.0.
The bars squad returns a significant amount of depth from the 2023 season. Davis, one of the best bar workers in the nation, showed off her stunning handstands and double front half dismount, while LeVasseur introduced a new dismount. Torrez stuck her double layout dismount and Bowers debuted gorgeous handstands and a stuck landing.
Two new faces made an appearance in the beam lineup in Scheible and freshman Keira Wells. Familiar faces for the beam squad include Davis, LeVasseur, Bowers, Torrez and
Ragan Smith. Scheible showed off a strong triple series and LeVasseur, Torrez and Bowers nailed their dismounts. Smith was strong as always, showing why she's one of the top beam workers in the nation.
On floor, the Sooners showed off their new choreography and music for the 2023 season. Leaning into the Taylor Swift craze, Smith performed to a medley of Swift's most popular songs while showing off her strong tumbling. LeVasseur displayed a beautiful western style routine and Davis had an upbeat, sassy performance. Bowers earned the second perfect score of the night for the Sooners with a sky-high double pike and intense, dramatic routine. Torrez anchored the lineup with her impressive double layout and a routine sure to impress Sooner fans this upcoming season.
The Sooners will have exciting matchups in the LNC in 2024, including a March 1 battle against the 2021 National Champion Michigan Wolverines and a March 17 matchup with future SEC foe, Alabama. The Sooners will also host Denver on January 26 for the home opener, along with a Feb. 9 quad meet against BYU, TWU and Utah State and a Feb. 23 conference dual with West Virginia.
"Oh Sooner Nation? We need to pack the LNC," Kindler said. "That place needs to be full, not a seat available. We can't wait to see you there."
