NORMAN – The Oklahoma volleyball team closed out the 2023 season with a 3-2 (22-25, 25-15, 25-19, 26-28, 15-9) win over West Virginia Saturday afternoon in front of 1,663 fans inside McCasland Field House.
Prior to the match, the Sooners honored their 2023 senior class of Kristen Birmingham, Kelsey Carrington, Daleigh Ellison and Callie Kemohah.
"All four of them have done a tremendous job leading our program and our team and setting the standard inside and outside the gym," head coach Aaron Mansfield said.
Carrington and Ellison both had strong performances for the Sooners. Carrington finished with 13 kills and five blocks, while Ellison notched 11 kills and four blocks.
Taylor Preston led the offense with 17 kills, while also adding two service aces and four blocks. Lydia Burts and Ireland McNees each recorded 11 kills, while Burts chipped in five blocks and McNees recorded seven digs and three aces.
Kemohah tallied 21 digs and four assists on the day. Sydney Thompson chipped in 12 digs and three aces, along with a pair of assists. Payton Chamberlain recorded 55 assists to go with four kills, five digs and three blocks.
The Sooners took a 13-9 lead before a WVU run gave the Mountaineers a 15-13 advantage. The teams traded points through the second half of the set with WVU holding a one-point lead at 20-19. West Virginia used a 5-2 run to take the first set, 25-22.
After taking a quick 3-0 lead, the Sooners fell behind the Mountaineers, 9-6. The Sooners battled back to tie the match at 10-10 and took the lead at 12-11. At the media timeout, OU had a three-point lead, 15-12. The Sooners used a 10-3 run to even up the match with a 25-15 win in set two.
West Virginia led 15-14 after a back-and-forth start to the set. The Sooners pulled ahead 17-15, before West Virgnia took back the lead at 19-17. The Sooners used an 8-0 run to pull off the 25-19 third set win and take a 2-1 lead in the match.
In the fourth, the Sooners trailed 13-7 early and used a 4-0 run to pull within two at 13-11. The Mountaineers pushed their lead back out to four at 13-17, but back-to-back kills from Preston made it 20-19 in favor of the Sooners. OU had match-point at 24-22, but WVU fought off back-to-back points to tie it at 24-all and took the set, 28-26.
WVU jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead in the fifth, but the Sooners responded with a 3-0 run to tie the set. OU capitalized on a pair of WVU errors to take a 7-5 lead and force a Mountaineer timeout. At the switch OU led 8-5 and extended their lead to 13-7 late in the set. A kill from McNees gave OU match point and Preston closed it out with her 17th kill.
