NORMAN – Oklahoma senior forward
Skylar Vann was named to the 2023-24 Preseason All-Big 12 Team, the conference office announced Wednesday. The preseason all-conference team was selected by the league's head coaches who were not permitted to vote for their own players.
Vann, the first ever back-to-back recipient of the league's Sixth Player Award, will look to make her first postseason All-Big 12 team this season after receiving an honorable mention as a junior in 2022-23. This is Vann's first preseason All-Big 12 honor and the seventh consecutive year at least one Sooner received a spot on the league's preseason team.
An Edmond, Okla., product, Vann has been one of the nation's best players off the bench over the past two seasons. As a junior, she posted 11.5 points, a team-high 6.8 rebounds and a career-high 2.1 assists per game. Her 20 games of double-digit points a season ago were the most in the Big 12 among players without a start, and she was the only player in the country to average 11.5 points and 6.5 rebounds coming off the bench. Her 11 points and 11 rebounds vs. Portland in the first round of the NCAA Tournament made her the first Sooner since Kaylon Williams in 2015 to notch a double-double in the tournament.
In the last 15 years of women's college basketball, there have only been two seasons in which a player with one or fewer starts has averaged 11.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game – Vann is responsible for both.
Oklahoma opens the 2023-24 season on Nov. 6 against Wichita State at Lloyd Noble Center. The Sooners' Big 12 slate begins on Dec. 30 when UCF comes to Norman.
