Scott Named to Watch List for Lisa Leslie Award

October 20, 2023 | Women's Basketball

NORMAN – Oklahoma redshirt senior center Liz Scott was named to the watch list for the Lisa Leslie Award on Friday. The award is given annually to the nation's top center and is presented by the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association.

Scott, a three-year starter for the Sooners, was a key piece of Oklahoma's Big 12 championship a season ago and started every game for OU. She joins teammate Skylar Vann on preseason positional watch lists, as Vann was named to the Cheryl Miller (SF) watch list earlier this week.

"The student-athletes that have been named to the Lisa Leslie Award Watch List are some of the best centers in the game, and we are excited to watch them excel on the court this season," said John L. Doleva, President and CEO of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. "Lisa Leslie is one of the greatest basketball players of all time, and her achievements at the collegiate, international and professional levels go largely unmatched by anyone in the game. We are thankful for her involvement alongside the selection committee throughout this process."

The Houston, Texas, product averaged career highs in points (8.6), rebounds (6.3) and assists (1.5) last season and notched three double-doubles. One of the nation's most efficient players, she joined first-team All-American Angel Reese (LSU) and top-five WNBA draft pick Stephanie Soares (Iowa State) as the only centers in the nation to average 21.5 points and 15.5 rebounds per 40 minutes in 2022-23.

As a senior last year, Scott led the Big 12 in defensive rebounding rate (27.2%) in conference play and finished third in the Big 12 in player efficiency rating (27.3) in league games. She is one of five Big 12 centers named to the 20-player watch list, joining Taiyanna Jackson (Kansas), Ayoka Lee (Kansas State), Sedona Prince (TCU) and Taylor Jones (Texas). Scott is the first Sooner named to the Lisa Leslie watch list since Vionise Pierre-Louis in 2017.

Fans are encouraged to participate in Fan Voting, presented by Dell Technologies, in each of the three rounds starting today, October 200. In late January, the watch list of 20 players for the 2024 Lisa Leslie Award will be narrowed to 10, and then in late February, to just five. In March, the five finalists will be presented to Leslie and the Hall of Fame's selection committee, where a winner will be selected.

The 2024 Lisa Leslie Award winner will be presented on a to-be-determined date, along with the other four members of the Women's Starting Five. Additional awards being presented include the Nancy Lieberman Award (Point Guard), Ann Meyers Drysdale Award (Shooting Guard), Cheryl Miller Award (Small Forward), and the Katrina McClain Award (Power Forward), in addition to the Men's Starting Five.

Previous winners of the Lisa Leslie Award are Aliyah Boston, South Carolina (2020-23), Megan Gustafson, Iowa (2019), and A'ja Wilson, South Carolina (2018).

Oklahoma opens the 2023-24 season on Nov. 6 against Wichita State at Lloyd Noble Center. The Sooners' Big 12 slate begins on Dec. 30 when UCF comes to Norman.
