Williams Named To Wooden Award Midseason Watch List

January 04, 2023 | Women's Basketball

NORMAN – For the first time in her career, Oklahoma redshirt senior Madi Williams was one of 25 players named to the John R. Wooden Award Midseason Watch List, it was revealed Wednesday night. The award annually recognizes the nation's top player and is one of the most prestigious honors in college basketball.

Williams leads the Sooners in points this season, scoring 17.0 per game and shoots at a 55.1% clip while posting six rebounds per contest. One of the league's toughest defenders, Williams leads No. 17 Oklahoma with 22 steals on the year and has five blocks. In addition, the Fort Worth, Texas, product is the only player in the country to average 17 points, 6.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game while averaging 25 minutes per game or less.

One of the best to ever play in Norman, Williams has lead Oklahoma to an 11-2 record in 2022-23 after guiding the program back to the NCAA Tournament last season for the first time since 2017. Williams needs just five assists to become the first OU player ever to post 2,000 points, 850 rebounds and 300 assists in their career. The Sooner is one of two Big 12 players to be named to the midseason watch list, joining Iowa State Ashley Joens. Oklahoma and No. 11 Iowa State are set for a nationally televised showdown on Jan. 8 at 2 p.m. in Norman, with the game airing on ESPN 2.

The players on the list are considered strong candidates for the 2023 John R. Wooden Award Women's Player of the Year, presented by Wendy's. Players not chosen to the preseason or midseason list are still eligible for the Wooden Award™ National Ballot. The National Ballot consists of 15 top players who have proven to their universities that they meet or exceed the qualifications of the Wooden Award. Voters will rank in order 10 of those 15 players when voting opens before the NCAA Tournament and will allow voters to consider performance during early round games. The Wooden Award All American Team™ will be announced the week of the "Elite Eight" round of the NCAA Tournament. The 2023 John R. Wooden Award winner will be presented by Wendy's following the NCAA Tournament in April.

Williams seeks to become the second Sooner ever to be a Wooden Award finalist, as Courtney Paris did so four times. The 2023 John R. Wooden Award recipient will be recognized on April 7, 2023.
