Sooners Respond, Start French Tour With Win

August 09, 2022 | Women's Basketball

ROANNE, France — The Oklahoma women's basketball team passed the first test of its French Tour on Tuesday night, dispatching Roanne Basket 73-60 in Roanne.

The Sooners outscored the French professional club by 19 points after the first quarter, highlighted by freshman Reyna Scott's 14-point, nine-rebound performance.

"It took us a little bit to get going, but it was so fun to see how we responded," head coach Jennie Baranczyk said. "It was great to play so many different people against such a high-level opponent."

Oklahoma trailed 14-8 after the first frame but started to heat up in the second quarter. Scott made her first bucket, a jumper from the enlarged European paint, and followed that with a putback and-one effort to give OU the momentum. The Sooners outscored Roanne 25-15 in the frame to take a 33-29 lead into the break.

"For us to respond the way we did is so important," Baranczyk added. "This is going to be a really fun year, and this was a great start to this trip and year."

The third quarter saw the two sides battle in a low-scoring frame, as the Sooners held Roanne to just 15% from the field in the quarter, but a cold stretch offensively saw Baranczyk's squad's lead dwindle to three points entering the final stretch.

In the fourth quarter, Oklahoma veteran Madi Williams took over as her teammates kept feeding her the ball. Through 30 minutes of play, Williams had just three points, but the Fort Worth product made her presence felt down the stretch, scoring seven more points paired with three rebounds in the fourth. With the Sooners looking for the dagger in their first French contest, Skylar Vann found transfer sharpshooter Aubrey Joens, who buried a 3-pointer to secure Oklahoma's 73-60 victory.

Oklahoma outrebounded RBF 65-38, grabbing 19 offensive boards in the win. The Sooners dished out 21 assists, led by junior Nevaeh Tot's five. OU spread the wealth all night long as 10 Sooners scored.

Freshman Reyna Scott led the way with team highs in points (14) and rebounds (9) in her first action with the Sooners. Defending Big 12 Sixth Player of the Year Skylar Vann shined off the bench, tallying 12 points with six rebounds. Taylor Robertson nearly totaled a double-double, registering nine points with eight boards, adding three assists for good measure.

Tuesday's game marked the first of a three-game stretch for the Sooners in France. The team returns to the floor on Thursday when it takes on a team in the Lithuanian national program at 10 a.m. CT.
