Audra Cohen announced Wednesday the addition of Julia Garcia Ruiz for the 2022-23 season.
"We are really excited to add someone with Julia's talent and character," said Cohen. "Julia's work ethic and energy fits perfectly with our culture and we cannot wait for her to get here."
From Morelia, Michoacán, Garcia Ruiz has a career-high ITF junior ranking of 20 and rose to the number one player in the 2017 national rankings. She also competed in the U.S. Open, French Open and Wimbledon junior tournaments.
She became the singles champion at the 2017 National Olympiad, won bronze in mixed and silver in doubles. Garcia Ruiz then went on to win the National Master Tournament of Pachuca, Hidalgo and become the J1 Cuenca Singles Champion. She ended her successful year with a tour of Central America.
"After my official visit, University of Oklahoma became my dream school," said Garcia Ruiz. "The team is amazing, and I know I will be able to reach my goals with them. I am absolutely thrilled to become a Sooner!"
The Sooners are coming off a national runner-up finish in 2022 and the program's most historic season. The team collected 32 wins, eight against top-10 teams and 13 over top-25's and reached the ITA National Indoor championship in the program's first appearance.
