Sooners Land Four on PING All-Region Central Team

NORMAN – Following a record-breaking regular season, four Sooners were named to the PING All-Central Region team and are one step closer to All-America status, the Golf Coaches Association of America announced Sunday.

Chris Gotterup, Logan McAllister, Drew Goodman and Patrick Welch comprise the Sooner contingent on the Central Region team and make OU one of three schools in the region with four or more selections. It brings Oklahoma's four-year total to 16 honorees, second in the region to only Texas.

Gotterup, who entered the postseason as the consensus No. 1 golfer in the country, earned the Central Region selection for the first time after transferring from Rutgers after a four-year career as a Scarlet Knight. His 2022 selection, paired with his four Northeast Region selections at RU, make him a five-year All-Region honoree. A 2020 PING All-American, Gotterup is a finalist for the Haskins and Jack Nicklaus Awards, both awarded annually to the nation's best player. His nine top-10 finishes this season were highlighted by wins at the East Lake Cup and Puerto Rico Classic, the latter of which earned him his first PGA Tour start at the Puerto Rico Open.

McAllister's selection is the second of his career as the senior and No. 3 golfer in the country is in line to become a two-time All-America honoree. Also a finalist for the Haskins and Jack Nicklaus Awards, the Oklahoma City product hasn't finished outside of the top 20 all season and owns the school's career record for scoring average at 70.93 (-0.51). His four career victories, including one in 2022, are the second most in the OU annals.

Goodman, who sits inside the top 10 at the national championship after 36 holes, becomes the first OU freshman to earn an All-Region nod since Brad Dalke in 2016. In addition, the Norman product is in line to break fellow All-Region honoree Patrick Welch's freshman scoring record vs. par at OU, as Goodman owns a -0.48 mark under par in 2021-22, nearly a third of a stroke better than Welch in 2019.

Welch, a now four-time selection, rounds out the Oklahoma contingent and becomes the first Sooner of the Hybl era to earn the honor in their first four years on campus. The senior, who withdrew his name from the PGA Tour U ranking and intends to return to OU next season, posted his second career victory at the Southern Highlands. With his victory in Las Vegas, he broke the school record for best back-to-back tournament performances by signing for matching 202s (-14) at the Puerto Rico Classic and Southern Highlands.

The Sooners will lean on their four honorees as they continue play in the 2022 NCAA Championships, where Hybl's squad held the 36-hole lead.
