ARLINGTON, Texas –
Peyton Graham hit a grand slam and
Tanner Tredaway registered four hits to lead the Oklahoma baseball team to a 6-4 win over West Virginia in the first round of the 2022 Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship Wednesday night at Globe Life Field.
Graham's grand slam carried a five-run second inning for the Sooners (34-20).
John Spikerman singled home the first run of the game and OU added another run in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Tredaway. The win was Oklahoma's first opening-game win in the Big 12 tournament since 2013.
Sophomore
Carson Atwood made his first career start, matching his career high with 3.0 innings. He struck out two batters and allowed one hit and no walks in 3.0 innings.
Carter Campbell pitched 2.0 shutout innings and
Chazz Martinez tossed 3.0 frames. OU held the Mountaineers (33-21) scoreless until the eighth inning.
Wallace Clark led off the second inning with an infield single, and
Jackson Nicklaus and
Kendall Pettis walked.
John Spikerman lined a base hit to center field to put Oklahoma ahead 1-0. Graham followed with his grand slam to straightaway center field. It was his 15th home run and second grand slam of the season.
In the fourth inning,
Blake Robertson was hit by a pitch and scored from second on Tredaway's third single of the night.
West Virginia scored a run on a wild pitch in the eighth inning and got home runs from Grant Hussey and J.J. Wetherholt in the ninth inning. WVU starter Jacob Watters (3-7) took the loss.
Oklahoma will face second-seeded Texas Tech in a winner's bracket game at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
