OU Falls To No. 4 Texas in National Championship

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — In the program's first national championship appearance, the No. 2 Oklahoma women's tennis team fell to No. 4 Texas 4-1 on Sunday night to close its historic season.

In doubles, the Longhorns came out strong to claim the opening point. No. 67 Charlotte Chavatipon and Kylie Collins defeated Alexandra Pisareva and Layne Sleeth 6-1 at the No. 2 spot. Securing the lead going into singles, Sabina Zeynalova and Bella Zamarripa took court three 6-2 over Dana Guzman and Emma Staker.

When play was halted, No. 10 Ivana and Carmen Corley were down 4-3 against No. 11 Allura Zamarripa and Peyton Stearns at the top court.

Opening singles action, the Sooners were quick to take the first win. Staker, who clinched OU's trip to the final, defeated Vivian Ovrootsky 6-1, 6-1 on court six.

Texas went on to secure wins on the next three courts. No. 2 Stearns claimed the top-court win over No. 10 Sleeth in a 6-0, 6-2 fashion. On court three, No. 97 Ivana Corley was close to send the battle to a third set with a 5-2 lead but fell to No. 93 Zeynalova 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) in a tiebreaker. Also nearing a third set, Pisareva led set two 4-2 but was forced into a tiebreaker, ultimately falling 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) to Allura Zamarripa for the title.

When play was halted, No. 53 Carmen Corley was down 7-5, 2-6, 1-2 on court two in an intense back-and-forth battle. Nearing a Sooner win, Guzman was up 4-6, 6-2, 5-2 at the No. 4 spot against Chavatipon.

The Sooners ended their season 32-3 overall, setting a new program record for most wins in a season.

UP NEXT

Layne Sleeth and Carmen Corley will play in the NCAA Singles Championships, beginning May 23, while Carmen and Ivana Corley will compete in the NCAA Doubles Championships, starting May 24, at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex in Champaign, Illinois.
