Aubrey Joens Signs With Sooners

May 19, 2022 | Women's Basketball

NORMAN – Oklahoma head women's basketball coach Jennie Baranczyk announced the signing of Iowa State transfer Aubrey Joens on Thursday.

Joens (pronounced Jones), an incoming junior guard, will join the Sooners' roster for the upcoming season after a productive two-year career in Ames, where she cemented herself as one of the nation's top 3-point shooters.

"We're excited to make Aubrey a Sooner," head coach Jennie Baranczyk said. "She is a great shooter with a blue-collar mentality that will immediately make us better and add to our depth. She is the epitome of a team player and has always been a part of winning programs. Her experience will be something we can lean on and we can't wait to get her to Norman!"

In two years at Iowa State, Joens appeared in 61 games with 17 starts. She scored double-digit points in 12 games, including nine in 2021-22. A lethal 3-point shooter, she fired from deep at a 42.5% clip last season, leading the nation's top 3-point attack. In addition, Joens is a strong rebounding guard, posting double-digit rebounds five times last season to secure three double-doubles. Over her 61 games played, she averaged 5.6 points and 3.5 rebounds for the Cyclones.

Joens, who was regarded as one of the nation's top recruits as a senior in 2019-20 at Iowa City High School, scored over 1,600 points in her high school career. A five-star prospect per ESPN, the 5-8 guard was the No. 52 ranked player in the class and the 13th-best guard in 2020. She was a featured member of the All-Iowa Attack AAU team that claimed the 2018 national title at the Nike EYBL tournament and a member of the 2019 national runner-up squad.

She is the daughter of Brian and Lisa Joens and has four sisters, including Iowa State All-American, Ashley.

Joens will bolster an already formidable Oklahoma team that ESPN tabbed as the country's preseason No. 10 squad for the 2022-23 season. Led by Jennie Baranczyk in her second season at the helm, the Sooners return All-American honorable mentions Madi Williams and Taylor Robertson, as well as All-Big 12 honoree Ana Llanusa and now Joens, too. The Sooners' roster also features defending Big 12 Sixth Player of the Year Skylar Vann, in addition to Kelbie Washington and Nevaeh Tot, who have earned Big 12 honors in their careers.
