Sooners Solid at Lake Wheeler Invite
April 23, 2022 | Rowing

RALEIGH, N.C.Ā ā Seven second place finishes in the final ten races paired with two season low timesĀ for Oklahoma rowing highlighted a solid showing at the Lake Wheeler Invite.Ā
The Sooners raced five boats in all three sessions, three varsity eights and two varsity fours. Four of the five crews claimed a second place finish, with the second four, first four and first eight taking second twice on the weekend. Those four groups finished behind boats from programs currently ranked or receiving votes in the CRCA/PoCock poll in every race.
"I'm extremely proud of the whole team and the improvement we're seeing week to week," said head coach Leeanne Crain. "The first varsity eight put together three great races despite dealing with some injuries and illnesses. They're a tenacious group and I'm excited to see how much faster we can get in the last couple weeks of the regular season."Ā
Led by junior coxswain Riley O'Neill and fifth-year senior Maria Pergouli, the first varsity eight crew for Oklahoma took third in their first race with aĀ 06:45.097 across 2,000 meters. It is the group's second best mark of the season, only moments behind a 06:43.5 time at the Ohio State Invite two weeks ago. They would go on to finish second in their final two races, postingĀ times ofĀ 06:47.529 and 06:47.588. In their session two run, the Sooners finished only seconds off the pace of the boat from No. 10 Duke.Ā
Two of the crews for OU posted season lows while in Raleigh. The first varsity four beat their best mark in all three of their races over the weekend, culminating in a 07:48.177 on Saturday morning. The time is nine seconds faster than their previous low.Ā
The second varsity eight also put up their best times of the yearĀ in all three events. A session one time of 07:02.214 came in ten seconds ahead of their season record.Ā
OU's second varsity four, coming off their upset win over No. 20 Indiana two weeks ago, grabbed one third place and two second place results in Lake Wheeler Park. The third varsity eight snagged a second place finish in session two behind a time of 07:23.990, good for their second best of the year.Ā
