NORMAN – The Oklahoma baseball team scored seven runs in the sixth inning to overcome a three-run deficit and defeat Wichita State 9-5 Tuesday evening at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
Trailing 5-2, the Sooners (22-13) strung together four hits, four walks and five stolen bases during the bottom half of the sixth to take a 9-5 lead. OU had tied the game with two runs in the fourth inning. The Shockers (13-24) took a 2-0 lead with single runs in the first two frames and plated three runs in the top of the sixth.
Diego Muniz drove in three runs and Tanner Tredaway went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. Blake Robertson, Jimmy Crooks and Cade Horton also drove in runs for the Sooners.
Jaret Godman (1-0) earned the win with a relief inning and Trevin Michael got the final out with two runners on base to pick up his sixth save of the season. OU used eight pitchers in relief of starter Braden Carmichael. Colton Sundloff, Javier Ramos, Chazz Martinez, Nicholas Andrews and Jett Lodes combined for 6.0 scoreless relief innings. The redshirt freshman Andrews struck out two batters in his collegiate debut.
"(The sixth inning) started with the bat of Tredaway going from 0-2 to singling up to middle on a 3-2 pitch," Oklahoma head coach Skip Johnson said. "That's what got it rolling a little bit, and we started separating balls from strikes at a high level."
Tredaway's single to lead off the sixth inning was followed by walks to Peyton Graham and Robertson. Muniz ripped a two-run single through the left side and Crooks singled into right center, tying the game 5-5. OU took the lead on an RBI groundout by Horton, then Crooks scored on a wild pitch, Brett Squires came home on a double steal, and Tredaway singled home pinch runner John Spikerman to make the score 9-5.
Graham started Oklahoma's two-run fourth inning with a single and scored on a double by Robertson into the left central alley. Robertson then came home on a sacrifice fly by Muniz to tie the game 2-all.
Wichita State scored in the first inning on a solo home run by Brock Rodden and in the second on an RBI double by Couper Cornblum, then took advantage of an error to score three runs in the top of the sixth. Ross Cadena hit an RBI single, a run scored on an error following a bunt single by Andrew Stewart and Jack Sigrist hit a sacrifice fly. Reliever LJ McDonough (3-2) took the loss.
The Sooners return to Big 12 conference play this weekend with a three-game series at Kansas in Lawrence, Kan. Game times are set for 6 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
