Sooners Run-Rule Horns to Take Series
April 15, 2022 | Softball
AUSTIN — No. 1 Oklahoma clinched the series over No. 18 Texas in run-rule fashion Friday night, winning 9-1 in five innings.
OU (38-0, 8-0 Big 12) has now won 23 straight over Texas and clinched its seventh consecutive Big 12 series over UT with the win. It was OU's 31st run-rule victory in 38 games and third mercy-rule win over a top-25 opponent. Additonally, OU extends its win streak to 40 straight dating back to the 2021 Women's College World Series Championship Series.
Sophomore Alyssa Brito exploded for two home runs, making it three in two games vs. Texas (30-12-1, 6-2). Brito finished 3-for-3 with three RBIs on the night to lead the Sooners.
Oklahoma registered eight hits for nine runs in the game while the OU pitching duo of Nicole May and Hope Trautwein sacrificed just one run on four hits.
After a scoreless first, OU would score in each of the next four innings. In the second, the Sooners went on top via a Texas throwing error that allowed sophomore Jayda Coleman to race home.
Texas tied the game in the bottom of the second on a solo home run by JJ Smith. It marked the first run the Sooners have given up since April 1 vs. UAB and the first home run surrendered since March 22 at Kentucky.
Oklahoma responded with eight unanswered runs.
In the third, Brito blasted her first homer of the game on a solo shot to center field. After Texas put two on with no outs in the bottom half of the third, Coleman and Jana Johns combined to cut off the lead runner with an exceptional throw and tag. Coleman snatched a ball off the wall and rifled down the runner at third with Johns executing the tag on the baserunner's right foot. Trautwein proceeded to retire two of the next three to strand a pair.
The fourth inning saw Johns register her first RBI of the game on a single up the middle. Johns plated Hansen after Hansen recorded the first stolen base of her career to get to third.
Brito hit her second home run of the game and third in her last four at-bats in the fifth inning to start a six-run frame for the Sooners.
Following a walk to Tiare Jennings and single off the wall from Jocelyn Alo, Grace Lyons brought home Jennings with a well-executed squeeze bunt. After another Sooner single and walk, Johns brought in one on a bases-loaded walk before junior Rylie Boone brought in a pair on an RBI single through the right side. Brito closed the half-inning with her third RBI of the game, plating Johns on a single up the middle. The Sooners put six runs up on six hits in the fifth.
After Texas loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth, Trautwein worked her way out of it with help from her infield. With one out, Texas' Mary Iakopo lined into a double play, with Jennings snatching the liner and doubling up a UT runner at second with a toss to the shortstop Lyons to end the game.
Six Sooners registered a hit in the game with four plating at least one run, led by Brito's three runs batted in. Boone and Johns each brought in a pair with 2-for-3 performances at the plate while Lyons brought one home, finishing 1-for-3 with a run scored.
In the circle, Trautwein earned the win after entering in relief in the third and allowing two hits and two walks to one strikeout. The Pflugerville, Texas, native stranded five Longhorns in her three innings pitched. May surrendered one run on two hits with two walks and one K.
The Sooners go for the series sweep at 1 p.m. CT Saturday. The game can be seen on Longhorn Network and heard via 107.7 The Franchise and nationwide on The Varsity app.
