Gotterup, McAllister on Spring Haskins Watch List
April 11, 2022 | Men's Golf
NORMAN – Forming the top one-two punch in college golf, Oklahoma men's golf seniors Chris Gotterup and Logan McAllister were named to the spring watch list for the Haskins Award, the award committee announced Monday.
The Haskins Award has been awarded to the nation's top golfer annually since 1972, and its winners have gone on to win 32 major championships. Gotterup and McAllister's appearance on the list makes top-ranked Oklahoma the only school in the country with two student-athletes in the hunt for the nation's top individual trophy.
Gotterup, who transferred to Oklahoma this season following a four-year career at Rutgers, is amidst one of the best seasons in program history. The Little Silver, N.J., product owns the fourth-lowest single-season scoring average vs. par in OU history this season, firing a -1.73 score per round. He matches McAllister with a team-high 10 rounds in the 60s and has tallied seven top-20 finishes in nine events, highlighted by wins at the East Lake Cup and Puerto Rico Classic. His 20-under par win at the Puerto Rico Classic earned him a spot in the Puerto Rico Open on the PGA Tour in April, where he made the cut and finished as the low amateur in a tie for seventh.
McAllister, the program's all-time leader in career scoring average (71.09, -0.33), is on the Haskins Watch List for the second consecutive year. A product of Oklahoma City, he owns seven top 20s in eight tournaments this season, powered by a win to open the season at the Carmel Cup. His 2021-22 scoring average vs. par of -1.79 would be the third-lowest in program history if the season ended today. The senior, who made his professional debut at the PGA Tour's Valero Texas Open earlier this month, needs one more win to match Anthony Kim's school record of five career victories.
The two both sit inside the top 15 of the PGA TOUR University Velocity Global Ranking, which would give them professional status following conclusion of the NCAA Championship. McAllister sits fourth on the list while Gotterup enters the week ranked 14th. The top five finishers will earn membership on Korn Ferry Tour, and players finishing sixth through 15th will earn membership on a PGA TOUR international tour. The Sooners landed three inside last year's top 15, with Jonathan Brightwell, Quade Cummins and Garett Reband all earning status.
This weekend, the two All-Americans return to action when OU tees off at the regular season-closing Thunderbird Collegiate at Papago Golf Club in Tempe, Ariz. The Sooners, currently the nation's top-ranked team, will then ready for NCAA Regionals, slated for May 15-18.
