HOUSTON – UCLA scored 12 runs in the first three innings and Oklahoma plated three runs in the fourth but could never fully recover in a 15-3 defeat Saturday afternoon in the Shriners Children's College Classic at Minute Maid Park.
The six-run first inning represented the first runs the Sooners (5-4) have allowed in the opening frame all season. The Bruins (7-4) added three runs in the sixth to reach the final margin and end the game after seven innings.
The first six batters in the OU order all recorded a hit in the game.
Jackson Nicklaus drove home the first run with a double to right field.
Cade Horton followed with an RBI single and
Sebastian Orduno laid a squeeze bunt to plate Nicklaus as part of OU's fourth inning.
"It was a little bit of a letdown game," Oklahoma head coach
Skip Johnson said. "That happens when you have a tough game yesterday and a quick turnaround. We have to overcome that, learn from it and move on. We had some competitive at bats in the fourth and put a little rally together, and that was good. We have to keep playing the game. That's what it's about. You come to the ballpark to play the game. That's the thing that we have to keep growing in. It'll turn around and we'll keep going. We haven't lost anything. You have a letdown, it's good to learn from that. We have to get focused on pitch to pitch, and that's what really matters."
Tanner Tredaway started the fourth inning with a one-out double to right center field and Crooks walked. Nicklaus then laced a double toward the line in right field, scoring Tredaway, and Horton lined a base hit to right, plating Crooks. Orduno laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt, allowing Nicklaus to reach the plate.
Peyton Graham hit a one-out single in the fifth inning and reached third base with two outs, and Crooks singled up the middle with one out in the sixth inning. Two-hole hitter
Blake Robertson reached on an infield single in the first inning, but a hard line drive up the middle by Tredaway was caught by the second baseman and Crooks' deep drive was snagged as the right fielder crashed into the wall.
The Bruins scored in the first inning on a two-run single by Ethan Gourson and a grand slam by Carson Yates, then added six runs in the third inning on six hits, including five doubles. In the sixth inning, a solo home run by Cody Schrier, a double and a groundout made the score 15-3. Yates had six RBIs in the game.
UCLA reliever Ethan Flanagan (1-0) earned the win while OU starter
David Sandlin (1-2) took the loss. Freshman
Keegan Allen made his first appearance on the mound, tossing a scoreless frame in the fourth.
The Sooners close out the Shriners College Classic Sunday against Tennessee. First pitch is set for 11 a.m.
