NORMAN – The Oklahoma women's basketball team fell to Notre Dame, 108-64, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament Monday night at Lloyd Noble Center, ending the team's historic turnaround season under first-year head coach Jennie Baranczyk.
The Sooners hit their first two shots of the night, both from Taylor Robertson, but the No. 5-seeded Fighting Irish (24-8, 12-5) used a 30-5 run over the last 7:52 of the first quarter to pull away, and Oklahoma (25-9, 12-6) wasn't able to erase the deficit.
Taylor Robertson led the team with 19 points while Liz Scott finished with 11 points and eight rebounds. Skylar Vann narrowly missed a double-double by posting 11 points and nine rebounds.
Although the Sooners' season ended Monday, it was one worth celebrating. Oklahoma posted 25 wins for the first time since 2009-10, and its 13-win improvement from last year's squad was the second-largest jump in program history. In addition, under Baraczyk's guidance, the Sooners posted 82.6 points per game, tied for the fourth-most in school history and hit a program-record 316 3-pointers.
Robertson and Madi Williams became the first pair since Aaryn Ellenberg and Whitney Hand (2012) to earn selections to the All-Big 12 First Team. The two leaders are finalists for their respective positional awards, with Robertson up for the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award and Williams a finalist for the Cheryl Miller Award. In addition, Skylar Vann earned Big 12 Sixth Player of the Year, and Kelbie Washington earned a spot on the Big 12 All-Freshman Team.
Baranczyk was named a semifinalist for National Coach of the Year following the team's turnaround and was a two-time National Coach of the Week selection. The Sooners won their first NCAA Tournament and Big 12 Championship game since 2017 in Branczyk's first season and reached 20 wins faster than all but two teams in program history. The 2022 Sooners are the first team to post fewer than 10 losses in a season since the 2008-09 team only dropped five games.
