Sooners Drop Finale to New Orleans

March 20, 2022 | Baseball

NORMAN – Sebastian Orduno notched two hits and two RBIs, but the Oklahoma baseball team fell to New Orleans 11-5 Sunday afternoon in the series rubber game at L. Dale Mitchell Park.

Orduno hit a two-run double in the eighth inning and OU loaded the bases on a pair of free passes, but a strikeout ended the inning. The Sooners (12-7) tallied 10 walks and nine hits in the game but were unable to overcome UNO's big innings. The Privateers (12-6) took advantage of 12 hits and four errors to score three runs in the first inning, two in the second and four runs in the eighth.

Diego Muniz doubled home Oklahoma's first run, scoring Tanner Tredaway in the fourth inning to make it 6-1. In the fifth, Peyton Graham doubled off the left center field wall, scoring Jackson Nicklaus from first base. The Sooners made it 7-3 in the sixth inning when Tredaway walked and scored on a base hit by Max McGwire.

Trailing 7-3, OU had two runners on base to start the seventh inning after singles by Orduno and Nicklaus. The Sooners loaded the bases in the eighth after Orduno's two-run double, and put two runners on base in the ninth inning before a double play ended the game.

New Orleans scored two unearned runs in the first inning on a dropped sacrifice fly that allowed two runs, followed by an RBI groundout. In the second inning, a double, error, sacrifice squeeze bunt and groundout scored two more runs. The Privateers added a run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Pearce Howard and another in the sixth on an RBI single by Amani Larry. UNO scored for more runs in the eighth inning on a solo home run by Tyler Bischke, a two-run single by Anthony Herron and a groundout.

OU starter Chazz Martinez (2-2) took the loss while UNO starter Collin Horton (2-0) earned the win.

The Sooners are scheduled to play at Wichita State at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, before opening Big 12 conference play against Baylor next weekend at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
