Williams' big week gives her Big 12's highest weekly accolade
NORMAN — Following a week where she led No. 12 Oklahoma to a pair of wins, including a road victory over then-No. 9 Baylor, senior guard Madi Williams was named the Big 12 Conference's Player of the Week, making her the fourth Sooner this season to win the honor.
Williams is the fourth Sooner to earn Big 12 Player of the Week honors this season, making Oklahoma one of two programs all-time to have four different student-athletes earn the league's highest weekly award in a season, joining Baylor who has accomplished the feat four times. The senior, who leads the Sooners in points and rebounds in 2021-22, joins Ana Llanusa, Taylor Robertson and Skylar Vann as OU hoopers to win this season.
The Fort Worth, Texas, product led the Sooners to a road win over No. 9 Baylor in Waco, Texas, on Wednesday, posting a team-high 20 points. Williams grabbed eight boards and dished out five assists in the Sooners' 78-77 win against the Bears, including the assist to Liz Scott on the game-winning bucket. On Saturday, the preseason unanimous All-Big 12 selection continued her impressive week by scoring 22 points in a double-overtime win over West Virginia in Norman. The forward was responsible for the go-ahead basket, scored with nine seconds left to push OU to a 101-99 victory.
The forward shot 51.6% from the field this week and 40% from behind the arc, including a perfect 2-of-2 clip vs. the Mountaineers.
The Sooners jumped a national-best six spots in the AP Top 25 Monday, moving from 18th to No. 12, the program's highest ranking since Nov. 28, 2016. Oklahoma hits the road for its third top-25 matchup in four games this Saturday when it takes on No. 16 Texas in Austin, Texas. The contest is slated for a 7 p.m. tip on ESPN+ as the Sooners will look to complete the season sweep of their rival, who they knocked off in Norman 65-63 on Jan. 29.
