Bahl Perfect, OU Sweeps Day One of Nutter Classic
February 25, 2022 | Softball
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. ā No. 1 Oklahoma (12-0) swept through day one at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic on Friday, run-ruling both opponents on the day. OU beat Cal-State Fullerton 10-0 in six innings before topping Long Beach State 11-3 in five.
The day was highlighted by a perfect performance in the circle by freshman Jordy Bahl in the day's first game. Bahl struck out 11 in the complete-game performance, allowing no hits or walks to the 18 batters she faced.
It marked the second perfect game on the season for OU after a combined perfect performance in the season opener. Bahl's unblemished game was the first individual perfect game since 2021 graduate Giselle Juarez at Iowa State on April 28, 2019. It was the first perfect contest from an OU freshman since Paige Parker vs. Utah Valley on May 3, 2015.
The offense continued its blazing start to 2022, hitting six home runs across the two games including four in the first matchup. Sophomore Tiare Jennings went yard twice vs. CSU-Fullerton (9-4), while seniors Lynnsie Elam, Jana Johns and Grace Lyons hit one a piece and sophomore Jayda Coleman blasted one on the day.
In pursuit of the record-breaking career home run No. 96, senior Jocelyn Alo collected two hits on the day and was walked a combined four times.
In game one, Jennings brought in a pair with a 3-for-4, two home run performance, while eight Sooners registered a hit and five brought in at least one run.
Jennings opened the scoring with a leadoff home run in the first inning before Elam and Coleman went yard in the second inning and Jennings blasted her second homer in the sixth. Lyons and sophomore Alyssa Brito continued the scoring in the sixth, with Lyons bringing in one on a sac-fly before Brito ripped a two-RBI single to give the Sooners their fifth double-digit win of the season.
Oklahoma turned around to face LBSU (2-8) in the second game of the day, putting up 11 runs on 10 hits. The Sooners started the game strong, scoring five runs in the first inning off homers from Lyons and Jennings and an RBI single from junior Kinzie Hansen.
Hansen brought in another run in the second on a single to right before LBSU got on the board in the third via a two-run shot to left from Jacquelyn Bickar. It marked the first earned runs given up on the season for the OU pitching staff. The Beach pushed another run across in the frame on an RBI single before sophomore Nicole May entered and got out of the inning with a strikeout.
OU put up five more runs across the fourth and fifth innings to bring the game into run-rule territory.
Brito continued her big day with a bases-clearing triple in the fourth to bring in a trio of OU runs prior to an RBI double from senior Jana Johns. Hansen forced the Beach defense into a fielder's choice that scored a run in the fifth to close the game's scoring and bring the Sooners to 12-0 on the year.
Seven Sooners recorded a hit in game two led by a 2-for-2 performance from Alo, a 2-for-3, three-RBI game from Johns and 2-for-4, two-RBI showing from Hansen.
May collected her fourth win of the season, going 2.1 innings, striking out a pair and surrendering two hits and no walks. Redshirt senior Hope Trautwein got the start and struck out four in 2.2 innings, giving up three runs on four hits, with only one run being earned.
The top-ranked Sooners turn around for two ranked games on Saturday vs. No. 8/10 Arizona (Noon CT) and No. 17/17 Tennessee (2:30 p.m.).
All games are available to watch on FloSoftball and can be heard on The Franchise 2 (103.3 FM/1560 AM) in Oklahoma and nationwide on the TuneIn app with OU play-by-play announcer Chris Plank on the call.
