Sooners Top Michigan in College Baseball Showdown Finale

February 20, 2022 | Baseball

ARLINGTON, Texas – Chazz Martinez struck out five and allowed an unearned run over 4.2 innings and the Oklahoma bullpen pitched another shutout as the Sooners defeated Michigan 6-1 Sunday night at the State Farm College Baseball Showdown at Globe Life Field.

Oklahoma, which beat Auburn 3-0 on Friday, capped a 2-1 weekend at the high-profile season-opening event.

Carson Atwood (1-0) got a looking strikeout to end the fifth, stranding two runners, and earned his second career victory. Griffin Miller pitched 2.2 scoreless innings with four strikeouts, retiring the first eight batters he faced, and Carter Campbell followed by ending the eighth with a groundout to leave a runner. Jaret Godman was perfect in the ninth, after picking up the save on Friday.

"The biggest thing is we had no walks. (The pitchers) threw to the target," Oklahoma head coach Skip Johnson said. "Chazz got into a little bit of trouble, but he backed off and got refocused, and it was really huge to see that. (Miller) was outstanding. I thought he was himself. He got into a real rhythm."

With two runners on in the second inning, Trent Brown cleared the bases with a double into the left center field gap to give the Sooners a 2-0 lead. Tanner Tredaway extended OU's lead to 3-1 on a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning after an RBI double by Michigan catcher Jimmy Obertop in the fourth.

OU was clinging to a two-run lead with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning when Kendall Pettis hit a grounder that was misplayed by the pitcher. The ball was then thrown into the third base dugout, allowing all three runners to score and make it a 6-1 ballgame. Pettis was credited with an RBI on the play.

Diego Muniz went 2 for 2 with a double and scored two runs. Pettis, Jimmy Crooks, who was 1 for 3 with a walk, Cade Horton and Sebastian Orduno (reached on walks) also crossed the plate for the Sooners.

Oklahoma plays its home opener on Tuesday against Wichita State. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
