Sooners Run By Florida at Jumpman Invitational

December 21, 2022 | Women's Basketball

CHARLOTTE – Taylor Robertson and Madi Williams combined for 40 points as No. 23/18 Oklahoma dominated Florida in a wire-to-wire 95-79 victory at the inaugural Jumpman Invitational on Wednesday night in Charlotte.

Robertson buried six 3-pointers to break the NCAA record for career games with five made treys at 40 for her career. Williams took over in the second half, scoring 16 of her team-high 22 points to push the Sooners (10-1, 0-0) to their seventh straight victory. Williams also added 11 rebounds to secure a double-double in the win.

"Tonight was a great night for our program and for Oklahoma," head coach Jennie Baranczyk said. "I thought we played really well on both ends of the floor and I'm so proud of these women for how they continued to play hard against a very talented Florida team."

Wednesday's game, played in front of over 19,000 fans at the Spectrum Center, was the finale of the first Jumpman Invitational, which featured the four original Jordan Brand schools: Oklahoma, Florida, Michigan and North Carolina. Oklahoma was the only school at the event to win on both the men's and women's sides.

"What a fantastic event and week this has been for the sport of basketball," Baranczyk added. "Thank you to the Charlotte Sports Foundation, the city of Charlotte and, of course, Jordan for welcoming us and putting on an incredible event for these players."

Oklahoma jumped out to an early 18-6 lead after Robertson buried back-to-back treys and outscored the Gators (11-2, 0-0 SEC) 21-9 in the opening frame. The Sooners' smothering defense forced 22 Gator turnovers on the night, as the OU lead grew even more in the second quarter, with Oklahoma grabbing a 43-23 advantage at the break. Both teams shot the lights out of the ball in the second half, but the Sooners grew their lead to 29 points early in the third quarter before finishing off the 95-79 victory.

Each half featured one Sooner star taking over the game, with the first 20 minutes belonging to Robertson and the second half in Williams' grasp.

Robertson, who entered the night three 3-pointers away from second in NCAA history for career treys, used her only miss of the night on her first shot. However, the sharpshooter buried her next four 3-point attempts to move up the NCAA leaderboard. The McPherson, Kan., product finished a blistering 6-of-7 from deep, matching her own record of 53 consecutive games with a deep ball to finish with 18 points, four rebounds and two assists.

Williams' double-double was the 25th of her career, now tied with Phylesha Whaley for sixth in program history. The All-America honoree from a season ago dominated the Gators in the second half by scoring 16 points, nine of which came in the third quarter alone. The redshirt senior finished with 22 points, 12 rebounds, five steals and two assists in her strongest outing of the season.

Skylar Vann continued to shine off the bench, pouring in 15 points with six boards in 15 minutes. Starting point guard Nevaeh Tot shined late, sinking a pair of fourth-quarter 3-pointers to finish with 12 points and four assists. Ana Llanusa posted nine points, five boards and a team-best five assists.

The Sooners shot 43% from both the field and from deep, making 12 3-pointers in the win. The 23 first-half points allowed were a season-low for an Oklahoma opponent. Dominant on the glass once again, the Sooners hit 50 rebounds for the third consecutive game for the first time in at least a decade, outrebounding Florida 51-40. Oklahoma has five games of 50+ boards in just 11 games, matching last season's total, which was the most since at least 2009. The Crimson and Cream dished out 24 assists as 10 players registered in a dime in the win.

For the second season under head coach Jennie Baranczyk, Oklahoma completed its non-conference slate with just one loss. The Sooners now turn their focus to conference play, which opens Dec. 31 on the road at West Virginia.
