NORMAN -Ā The Oklahoma men's gymnastics team hosted its annual intrasquad scrimmage Saturday afternoon in the Sam Viersen Gymnastics Center. The competition was the first opportunity for the team to perform their routines in front of fans and judges in preparation for the upcoming season.
"The guys did pretty well," said head coach
Mark Williams. "We've got places that we need to make improvements but as far as the guys performed, I was very happy. We have the potential to be a very good team. I can see the guys making the changes they needed from a month or two when things were rougher."
Oklahoma competed on all six events in front of a panel of judges.Ā
Senior
Jack Freeman started the day off by earning the highest score on floor. Freshman Ignacio Yockers took the event title on pommel horse, leaving a great first impression on fans. Senior
Morgan SeylerĀ came back strong on multiple events, leading scores on still rings and parallel bars, after an injury kept him out last season. With a 15.000 on vault, junior Dan Simmons brought home the highest score of the day. Fans were pleased to seeĀ Freeman end the meet with an exceptional high bar routine.Ā
"I think it went pretty well," said Freeman. "It's always a little difficult to come out on the first meet and be perfect. Today, we handled our business really well. We came in, and it wasn't perfect, but we picked it up where it fell. It was really good to see the freshmen attack it and do what they've been practicing. Kelton Christiansen did really well. I'm super proud of him. Overall, I'm super proud of the team. I'm really excited for this year and I think that this is just the beginning."
Senior captain
Spencer Goodell went on to say, "It's a good opportunity for everyone to get their feet wet and get comfortable with being uncomfortable. We still have a long ways to go to be where we want to be but this is a good stepping stone for the younger guys to step up in an environment like this with a lot of fans, some noise and some energy."
