NORMAN – With the 2022-23 season three days away from tipping off, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced that Oklahoma redshirt seniors
Madi Williams and
Taylor Robertson have been named to the Naismith Trophy Women's Watch List, given annually to the country's top women's basketball player.
It's Williams' second consecutive season on the watch list and the first occurrence for Robertson.
"We have selected an elite group of athletes for the 2023 Jersey Mike's Women's Naismith Trophy watch list this year, and we look forward to keeping an eye on these stellar players and adding additional excellent players as the season progresses," said Eric Oberman, executive director of the Atlanta Tipoff Club.
Williams, a forward from Fort Worth, Texas, was a WBCA All-America honorable mention last season after a year that saw her named a unanimous All-Big 12 first-team selection. She led the Sooners in scoring and rebounding a season ago and joined UConn's Breanna Stewart and Maya Moore, both Naismith Trophy winners, as one of three players since 2009 to average 18.0 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists in under 30 minutes per contest in a season.
Robertson, who enters the season as the Big 12 all-time 3-point holder, is poised to shatter the NCAA's career 3-point record after becoming the only player in women's basketball history to sink 100 treys in three different seasons. In addition, she reached 400 career 3-pointers faster than any men's or women's college player ever and is the nation's active leader in 3-pointers made (446), 3-point percentage (44.1%) and free throw percentage (91.9%).
The pair combine to comprise two-thirds of the highest-scoring returning trio in the nation, with fellow redshirt senior
Ana Llanusa occupying the final spot. Both preseason unanimous All-Big 12 selections, Williams and Robertson seek to guide No. 15/16 Oklahoma to its first Big 12 Championship since 2009.
The nation's top 50 players are featured on the preseason watch list, and a midseason team featuring 30 players will be announced in early January. The competition will be narrowed down to 10 national semi-finalists in early March. The finalists for the women's player of the year will be announced on March 21, and the winner will be named on March 29.
