Summy Leads Sooner Contingent Thru 36 at Colonial

October 03, 2022 | Men's Golf

FORT WORTH, Texas – Jase Summy led the way for Oklahoma on day one at the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational, firing a 3-under 67 to open the event followed by a 74 (+4) in the afternoon to grab a share of 23rd thru 36 holes of play.

Playing without its highest-ranked player in Patrick Welch, who is playing at the Shriner Children's Open on the PGA TOUR this week, Oklahoma fired a 573 (+13) and is in 15th after 36 holes in the 54-hole tournament. The field at Colonial features 13 ranked teams, including seven of the top 10.

Summy (T23, +1), a true freshman, was dialed in from the jump on Monday at the par-70 Colonial Country Club. He opened his first round with two birdies in his first three holes to take the early lead. Then, after starting on No. 6, Summy birdied the par-4 14th hole to make the turn with the co-lead at 3- under. He finished his opening round at 3-under par, good for T2 after 18 holes. However, the Keller, Texas, product struggled in the afternoon, posting six bogeys to just two birdies, settling for a 74 (+4). He shares 23rd with 18 holes to play on Tuesday.

Jake Holbrook (T34, +3) opened with a 71 (+1) in the morning before signing for a 72 (+2). The redshirt junior led the Crimson and Cream contingent with nine birdies, one more than Summy on the day.

Stephen Campbell Jr. and Drew Goodman are tied for 52nd at 5-over par. Luke Kluver made his Oklahoma debut Monday and is 10-over and alone in 76th.

Oklahoma tallied the fourth most birdies as a team on Monday, but a field-low 99 pars put the Sooners behind the talented field. North Carolina (-10) leads the event and is one of just five teams in the red.

The Sooners tee off at 8:50 a.m. CT in Tuesday's final round. They'll be paired with No. 10 Florida, Oregon and Southern California.
