October 28, 2022 | Men's Golf
LAHAINA, Hawaii – A strong start and close to its opening round powered No. 11 Oklahoma into solo second place at the three-round Ka'anapali Classic on Friday, putting the Sooners just one shot back of 18-hole leader Clemson with two days of play remaining.
Sophomore Drew Goodman is tied atop the individual leaderboard after tying his career-low round of 64 (-7) to open the weekend at the Royal Ka'anapali Golf Course. Three other Sooners, including two in the lineup, sit inside the top 20 after day one.
Goodman (T1, -7) opened his day with three birdies and an eagle over his first seven holes after starting on No. 3. Another birdie on the 14th moved him into the solo lead at 6-under, but a bogey on the 16th moved him back into fourth before an eagle on the par-5 first hole moved him back into the lead. The Norman product was one of three golfers to tally a pair of eagles on the day.
Stephen Campbell Jr. (T6, -5) tied for a team-high seven birdies en route to a 66 (-5) at the par-71, 6,700-yard course. The 66 matched Campbell Jr.'s season-low round.
Playing as an individual, Jase Summy (T11, -4) is the low unattached player after 18 holes. He is followed by teammate Luke Kluver (T28, -2) on the unattached leaderboard.
Three-time All-American Patrick Welch returned to the lineup after missing the team's last stroke-play tournament due to making his PGA TOUR debut. Welch rattled off seven birdies, signing for a 68 (-3) to grab a share of 16th.
Jake Holbrook (-1) and Jaxon Dowell (+1) closed out the Sooner contingent.
Oklahoma (2, -16) won the event in 2019, posting a then-school record 47-under over 54 holes.
The Sooners tee off at 1 p.m. CT Saturday with Clemson (-17), East Tennessee State (-15) and North Florida (-11).
