NORMAN – For the first time since 2017, Oklahoma is ranked in the preseason AP Poll as the Sooners will start the 2022-23 season ranked No. 15.
The Sooners' ranking of 15th is the team's highest in the preseason poll since the 2013-14 squad opened the year ranked 11th. As one of the most dominant programs of the 21st century, Oklahoma has now been ranked in the top 15 of the preseason AP poll 10 times since 2000.
Oklahoma ended a four-year-long absence from the poll in Jennie Baranczyk's first year as the OU head coach in 2021-22, appearing at No. 23 in week nine of the season. The Sooners, who went 25-9 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season, rose as high as No. 12 in last year's poll before closing the season ranked 22nd.
This year, the Crimson and Cream return over 90% of its scoring, rebounding and assists from a year prior. Led by the nation's highest-scoring trio in Madi Williams, Taylor Robertson and Ana Llanusa, the Sooners were picked third in the Big 12 preseason poll. Williams and Robertson made Oklahoma the only school in the Big 12 with two unanimous All-Big 12 preseason selections, while Llanusa was a preseason honorable mention. Those three are reunited with reigning Big 12 Sixth Player of the Year Skylar Vann, in addition to former Big 12 All-Freshman selections Nevaeh Tot and Kelbie Washington. In addition, the Sooners will welcome back four other letter winners from last season's team and added Iowa State transfer Aubrey Joens and a freshman class of four.
No stranger to the AP Poll, the Sooners have appeared in over 62% of all AP Polls since the turn of the century, 11th most in the country and third most in the Big 12 Conference.
Oklahoma's regular season opens Nov. 7 when it plays host to Oral Roberts at 4 p.m. CT inside Lloyd Noble Center. The Sooners' Big 12 slate starts Dec. 31 at West Virginia. Over half of Oklahoma's regular season games will pit the Sooners against NCAA Tournament teams from last season, including four in the non-conference slate.
