Liz Scott Leads OU in Bedlam Beatdown

January 26, 2022 | Women's Basketball

NORMAN Liz Scott poured in a career-high 22 points as the 18th-ranked Oklahoma women's basketball team claimed a wire-to-wire Bedlam victory on Wednesday night, dispatching the Cowgirls 84-58 at Lloyd Noble Center.

The win snapped a four-game Bedlam losing streak for Oklahoma (17-3, 6-2), which notched its first victory over Oklahoma State (6-11, 1-7) in over two years.

"I'm so proud of the way this team bounced back," OU head coach Jennie Baranczyk said. "We talked about that a lot before tonight's game, and it wasn't really pretty or flashy, but tonight we were gritty and we were tough. We played as team."

Scott sunk a pair of free throws 17 seconds into the game, giving the Sooners a 2-0 lead they wouldn't surrender. OU extended the lead to 26-15 by the end of the first quarter as Madi Williams tallied 10 of her 13 points on an efficient 4-of-5 shooting clip.

The Cowgirls slowed the game down in the second, holding the Sooners to just 16 points, but OU answered on the defensive end of the floor by keeping OSU scoreless over a nearly five-minute stretch in the period to take a 42-28 lead into the break.

Oklahoma was forced to weather the Oklahoma State run in the third as the Cowgirls came out of halftime on an 8-0 run to cut the OU lead to just six at the 7:07 mark of the third quarter. But a Taylor Robertson layup and Skylar Vann turnaround jumper jumpstarted the OU offense as the Sooners took a 13-point lead into the fourth.

The Sooners put the game on ice in the final 10 minutes. A 14-2 run over four minutes in the middle of the fourth extended the lead to 30 with just over a minute to play, and Oklahoma secured the 26-point win. The margin marked the largest in a Bedlam victory for OU since a 33-point win on March 7, 2010.

Scott's career night was aided by a career-high 10 made free throws on 12 attempts. The junior post added six rebounds and a steal and didn't log a single turnover. Williams finished with 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds, doing most of her work in the first half. Skylar Vann joined the two in double figures, tallying 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting. In her return to the floor, freshman point guard Kelbie Washington logged a +40 mark in 22 minutes with six points, six assists and four steals.

The Sooners outscored the Pokes 46-28 in the paint and forced the Cowgirls into a season-high 23 turnovers. Baranczyk's team shot 49.2% from the floor and .750 (21-of-28) from the charity stripe.

When league play had concluded on Wednesday, the Sooners remained in a tie atop the standings with Iowa State (17-3, 6-2). The two top-20 teams sit one game ahead of No. 9 Texas, which comes to Norman this Saturday for a showdown with the Sooners.

Saturday's contest vs. the Longhorns tips off at 2 p.m. and will air on Bally Sports Oklahoma.
