OU Scores 97 Points to Hold Off TTU

January 02, 2022 | Women's Basketball

The Sooners opened Big 12 play with a win over Texas Tech on Sunday.

LUBBOCK, Texas – A 3-point barrage pushed the Oklahoma women's basketball team past Texas Tech in Lubbock on Sunday as the Sooners opened the Big 12 slate with a 97-91 victory.

Oklahoma (12-1, 1-0 Big 12) has now won nine straight games, including three in a row vs. Texas Tech (7-5, 0-1 Big 12) dating back to last year. Four Sooners scored in double figures, led by Madi Williams' 24 points in her return to the floor after a one-game absence. Oklahoma sunk 13 3-pointers in the game, crossing the double-digit mark for the eighth time this year.

"We played well today against a really good Texas Tech team," head coach Jennie Baranczyk said after her first Big 12 win. "Both teams were pretty much as full and healthy as they can get and we knew they'd be very, very good and they were. I'm just really proud of how we started and felt that we had great runs in the second half. We have to finish a little bit better, but it was definitely fun for us today."

The Sooners took the lead with 6:15 in the first quarter off a Nydia Lampkin jumper from the elbow and never surrendered it, extending the lead to 25 points midway through the third before a Texas Tech run cut into the deficit over the final 15 minutes of play. Oklahoma's 97 points are tied for its most in a Big 12 game in the last decade, matching its output vs. Kansas on Jan. 24, 2018, and at TCU on Jan. 17, 2015.

Williams led the way with 24 points on 7-of-12 shooting while adding five rebounds and four assists. Skylar Vann, who tallied 21 points on Wednesday night vs. Wichita State, added 19 more points in Lubbock on 8-of-15 shooting. Taylor Robertson finished with 17 points on 6-of-11 from the field and tallied a team-high seven boards and five dimes. Kelbie Washington closed her strong week with 10 points and seven assists in her first career Big 12 game. Gabby Gregory made her season debut after missing the season's first 12 games.

The Sooners shot 47% on the night and 39% (13-of-33) from behind the arc, while the Lady Raiders shot an even 50% from the floor. In addition, OU dished out 22 assists, besting its season average of 20.0, which ranks second nationally.

Oklahoma returns to Norman on Wednesday for a showdown with No. 14 Iowa State at the Lloyd Noble Center. Tip off is set for 6 p.m. and the game will air on Bally Sports Oklahoma.
