NORMAN – Oklahoma women's basketball sophomore forward Skylar Vann was named the Big 12 Conference's Player of the Week after a career-best week where she powered the Sooners to wins over then-No. 14 Baylor and TCU.
The Edmond, Okla., native averaged 21.0 points per game across the two contests, scoring 22 vs. the Bears on 8-of-13 shooting and 20 more points in Saturday's showdown with TCU. In addition, the forward pulled down seven and six rebounds, respectively, in the contests. In the 83-77 upset over Baylor, Vann guided No. 14 Oklahoma (15-2, 4-1) to its first win over the Bears by adding four steals, three assists and three blocks to push the Sooners past the Bears, who have won 11 consecutive Big 12 titles.
Vann joins Ana Llanusa and Taylor Robertson to make it three Sooners that have earned the league's top weekly prize in 2021-22 and the only team in the league to have three different players claim the honor. It's the first career accolade for Vann, who played 23 of OU's 24 games last season and has appeared in every game this year.
Vann and the Sooners, who jumped from No. 23 in the AP Top 25 to 14th on Monday, return to the floor on Wednesday when they travel to Morgantown, W.Va., for a conference matchup with West Virginia. The Sooners' AP Top 25 ranking of 14th is the highest for the program since Nov. 28, 2016, when the Sooners were ranked No. 12, and the nine-spot jump in the poll is the largest in school history, surpassing the eight-spot leap after winning the 2004 Big 12 Tournament.
