NORMANĀ āĀ University of Oklahoma head wrestling coach Lou Rosselli announced the Sooners' 2021-22 schedule Tuesday.
The defending Big 12 co-champions will appear in 11Ā duals throughout the campaign while also competing at two open tournaments and then Virginia Duals, where the Sooners will compete in dual action against some of the nation's best teams.
"We have a great Big 12 schedule with a lot of good home duals this year," Rosselli said. "We're excited for the season and look forward to testing ourselves against the nation's best teams. We've got a bunch of nationally-ranked wrestlers that I expect to compete well at the Big 12 and NCAA championships."
The preseason No. 12 Sooners open their schedule Nov. 6 at the Michigan State Open in East Lansing, Mich. Oklahoma last appeared at the MSU Open in 2019 when it placed three into the finals and earned five top-five placements.
OU then begins dual action with a conference matchup at West Virginia on Nov. 13 in Morgantown, W.Va. The dual slate movesĀ west when the Sooners wrestle No. 8 Arizona State in Tempe, Ariz., Nov. 19, before heading north to Greeley, Colo., for a Big 12 dual versus Northern Colorado Nov. 21.
Awaiting the Sooners following their three-dual stretch is the Cliff Keen Invitational, scheduled for Dec. 12 in Las Vegas. Rosselli's team finished 10th at the 2019 Invitational, led by solid finishes from Dom Demas, Tony Madrigal and Jake Woodley. Along with Oklahoma, the 2021 CKI features Iowa State, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, NC State, Ohio State and others.
Bedlam returns to Norman on Dec. 12 when the Sooners host No. 3 Oklahoma State. The Sooners and Cowboys shared the Big 12 title in 2021.
Following the holiday break, OU heads east to Hampton, Va., for the Virginia Duals. The Sooners last appeared at the event in 2019, going 3-1 and finishing third. Since Rosselli has taken over the program, OU has finished inside the top four at each Virginia Duals.
OU's first Big 12-meeting with No. 2 Missouri since 2012 will take place in Norman on Jan. 20. The Tigers return to the Big 12 as an affiliate member this season following a nine-year run in the MAC.
Oklahoma then hits the road for an away dual at Northern Illinois on Jan. 23. The Huskies went 6-3 last season, finishing fourth in the MAC and qualifying five wrestlers to the national tournament.
The conference slate resumes Jan. 28 when Iowa State comes to Norman, followed by another home dual with Northern Iowa on Jan. 30. The Sooners remain at the friendly confines of McCasland Field House on Feb. 4 and Feb. 6 with home duals vs. Little Rock and South Dakota State.
The team's final regular-season test comes in the form of Bedlam in Stillwater, slated for Feb. 20 at Gallagher-Iba Arena.
The Big 12 Championship returns to Tulsa's BOK Center for the sixth-consecutive season on March 5-6, followed by the 2021 NCAA Wrestling Championships in Detroit, Mich., March 17-19.Ā Ā
In his sixth year at the helm of the seven-time national champion Oklahoma program, Rosselli returns his highest-ranked team to date. The Sooners' lineup is anchored by eight NCAA qualifiers, including All-American Jake Woodley (197 lbs.) and two-time Big 12 champion Dom Demas (141 lbs.). In addition, Tony Madrigal, Mitch Moore, Justin Thomas, Anthony Mantanona and Josh Heindselman are projected to return to the lineup in 2021-22.
Adding to the firepower that returns to Norman, Rosselli and his staff welcomed one of the top recruiting classes in the country to campus this fall. The Sooners joined Ohio State as the only schools two bring in two No. 1-ranked recruits in the 2021 class, as OU added Alejandro Herrera-Rondon (157 lbs.) and Tate Picklo (197 lbs.) to the roster. Oklahoma also welcomed NCAA qualifiers Joey Prata at 125 pounds and Keegan Moore at 184 pounds via the transfer portal.
As a team, Intermat ranks Oklahoma 12th in the country entering the year, powered by eight ranked wrestlers.
All times for duals will be determined closer to the competitions, and ticket information will be released closer to the start of the season. All of the Sooners' home duals are slated to be held at historic McCasland Field House.
