OU Claims Top-10 Finishes in Capital One Cup
July 16, 2021 | Athletics
NORMAN — The University of Oklahoma has finished in the top 10 of the 2020-21 Capital One Cup standings for both its women's and men's programs, with the women's teams placing fourth place and the men's squads securing 10th place.
Currently in its 11th year, the Capital One Cup is awarded to NCAA Division I programs for their cumulative athletic performance across multiple sports. Schools earn points based on top-10 finishes in NCAA championships and in final official coaches' polls across 21 women's and 20 men's sports.
Stanford, Michigan, North Carolina and Texas joined Oklahoma as the schools whose men's and women's programs both placed in the top 10 this past academic year. It marks the third time and first since 2016-17 that both OU's men and women have finished in the top 10 of the standings.
OU's women's teams tied their highest ranking and have now finished in the top 10 on five occasions, earning seventh place in 2013, fourth in 2016, sixth in 2017 and eighth in 2019. This was the third top-10 ranking for the men, who finished fourth in 2016 and eighth in 2017.
Sooner women's programs earned 96 points toward the Capital One Cup after winning an NCAA championship in softball and earning a runner-up finish in gymnastics, while the men earned 63 points for runner-up finishes in golf and men's gymnastics and a top-10 finish in football.
Stanford swept the men's and women's competitions for the 2020-21 season.
Oklahoma has won at least one national championship in each of the last eight years (not including the pandemic-shortened 2019-20 academic year) and 13 total during the stretch. The Sooners are also coming off their 19th consecutive semester of posting a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00, registering a school-record-tying 3.19 mark for the spring 2021 term.
