NORMAN – The Big 12 and Southeastern Conferences announced the matchups for the 2022 Big 12/SEC Challenge on Wednesday. Oklahoma will play at Auburn on Saturday, January 29.
The ninth-annual event will consist of 10 games as every Big 12 member faces 10 squads from the SEC. This will mark the seventh consecutive year for all games to be played in one day. ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU will combine to televise the contests. TV designations and game times will be announced when available.
OU is coming off a 16-11 season in which it went 9-8 in the Big 12 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament under now-retired head coach Lon Kruger. Auburn went 13-14 overall and 7-11 in the SEC under head coach Bruce Pearl.
The Sooners own a 2-1 all-time advantage against Auburn, winning 78-70 in the Big Sun Classic in St. Petersburg, Fla., during the 1978-79 season and 107-87 in the 1988 NCAA Tournament second round in Atlanta (OU advanced to the national championship game that year). Auburn posted a 74-70 series win during the 2016-17 season at the Birthday of Basketball event in Uncasville, Conn.
The Big 12 has a yearly Challenge record of 4-2-2, with wins in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2019. The two leagues tied in 2017 and 2020.
Oklahoma is 6-2 in the Big 12/SEC Challenge with wins over Alabama last year, Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, LSU, Missouri and Texas A&M. OU's six wins in the event are tied for second most among Big 12 teams.
The Sooners have won seven straight overall games against SEC schools. Included were victories last season versus No. 9 Alabama (66-61 in Norman) and Missouri (72-68 in the NCAA Tournament first round in Indianapolis).
Oklahoma, which has made seven of the last eight NCAA Tournaments, is under the direction of new head coach
Porter Moser, who led Loyola Chicago to the 2018 Final Four and the 2021 Sweet 16.
OU's full non-conference schedule is expected to be released soon.
